So we are meeting at Starbucks. Should I buy some coffee for him? Or no? Should I ask? Would it be weird?
Thanks.

me and my interviewer didnt even have anything at starbucks when we interviewed. dont bother buying him coffee, if anything i’d say they should buy you the coffee

I never interviewed for Cornell, but I met interviewers for several other colleges at coffee shops and they always offered to buy a drink for me. I think if you offered to pay, they’d insist that they pay for you instead.

i interviewed at starbucks for columbia.
i didn’t know what she wanted–cause some people, like me, hate coffee–so i waited for her to get there before i bought anything. she offered to buy me something. i offered to pay and buy her something. then she ended up buying me some tea…

i would wait until your interviewer gets there

It’s polite to offer, but if the interviewer wants to pay you should let him/her. It’s also ok if you each end up paying for your own drinks.

Don’t worry too much about it – you’ll get a sense of how the interviewer wants the situation to unfold when you get there. The bottom line is that you should follow the interviewer’s lead.

no. im pretty sure you shouldnt

Uh, no. Unless your interviewer is extremely old-fashioned, that’s definitely not necessary. Almost all of the alumni interviews I had for various colleges were with very recent graduates (late '90s classes) and they were all very casual and laid-back people.

what if the alumni graduated from the early 90s? any chance of her being as laid back as well? super nervous…

I’m sure you’ll be fine. There’s no reason to be super nervous; alumni interviews are at best an opportunity to present any major accomplishments since you applied, and at worst, a chance for you to ask some specific questions about the college.

no, the alumni interview has almost no bearing on your application anyway. Its mostly to provide you with information about the school, and to possibly screen for crazies.

Get him the most expensive drink you can find, and throw in a $50 gift card. He’ll get so happy he will just accept you.

J/k. No, don’t do it. He might think that you’re trying to pay him off with money.

Don’t worry about the coffee. In fact, your interviewer might buy you coffee instead lol.
Besides, I would think it would be weird to buy someone older than you, coffee.
However when I had the interview at a Starbucks, we both ended up buying our own coffee =/

it is always polite to accept the drink BUT if for some reason you don’t like coffee just arrive before the interviewer and buy yourself a drink (tea, soda, etc), then tell her/him that you already have one.

i would go with the above comment. that way there is no awkward, who-should-buy-who situation.
