Long Weekend

What do most mids do for this long weekend (MLK, inauguration)? stay on campus?
Does anyone know if the possibility exists for them to ride the bus with the band to DC (to stay with family) and ride back with the band? If not, recommendations for getting from KP to DC? Thank you!

We live in New Jersey and our Plebe is bringing 4 of his classmates home for the weekend.

My mids will only be home until Sunday evening. I'm not sure if they are bringing any others yet. All those going to the parade have to report back on Sunday night and they leave by bus on Monday. First stop is USNA where they are bunking for the night ( bring their own sleeping bags). Tuesday morning they head for Washington, DC. Last word was after the parade they will head back to KP. I guess they sleep on the bus since they have to attend classes on Wednesday morning.

I don't feel there will be any room on the busses for anyone that didn't sign up for the parade ahead of time. Along with the band, there are some Regimental officers, Color Guard and many members from the regiment. They were all fitted for special uniforms and have been practicing.

An interesting fact that I was not aware of, USMMA is the only service academy with a band made up of students from the regiment.

The parade route has been extended from 4.5 miles to 6.5 miles to accommodate the huge crowds that are expected. My husband & I will try to catch them on TV. We're not in to crowds that large.

Just another great opportunity for the Mids from KP.

momof2kpmids WELCOME TO CC! It's about time. LOL

We don't have our son come home on long weekends. When he has homework or other things to do at the campus, he stays on campus. There is also a family there that takes him and a few other m/s in, so sometimes he goes to their home for the weekend or maybe just one meal over the weekend.

He is out to sea right now, so we don't have to worry about this long weekend. We would like to hear from him. This last time we heard from him was the first of December on his way to Africa, right next to the pirates.

It's only about a four hour drive from DC to KP so they will be back on campus pretty early. The parade is early enough in the day that they won't be out that late.

For the last Inaugural Parade in '05, my s was in the band, so we decided to drive from outside Philadelphia to the northernmost metro station off 95. What a nightmare the whole day turned into! Got into DC with no problem, but the security lines were incredibly long. We finally got through one (pat-down, x-ray, etc), then couldn't get to where we could see the parade and somehow ended up out of the security perimeter. Went to a bar & grill to warm up and recoup, figured that after all that we weren't going to see anything, when my s called and said they were just stepping off at the Capitol. We decided to give it another try, and managed to get through security again about 5 min before the KP band went by. He heard my husband whistle (a sound he's answered to since he was a toddler!). We never got to talk to him in person, but it ended up being a worthwhile trip. BUT, there is NO WAY I'd go to the parade this year, since I think many more people are going to try to get there!

I'm not so sure about them getting back to campus at all early. It could very well take them at least 4 hours to get out of the zoo that DC will be that day. DD mumbled something about having been given an ETA of 0400 for return to KP! The truth probably lies somewhere between the two estimates.

Does anyone have any idea where one would find a schedule of the parade entrants and where they might appear in order? Can't say we could spend all morning watching the TV to see a 5 second glimpse of our favorite mid. Maybe I should invest in TIVO.
