LOOK HERE! need career/major advice, PLEASE

Hi, im a senior in a NJ HS and I have gotten into all my colleges, Rutg'ers, Northeastern, Syracuse, Cornell, Oberlin in Ohio, Boston College and BU. My top 3 right now, based on money issues and levels of comfort, are Syracuse, Northeastern, and Rutgers. My problem is, Im not so sure bout my major anymore!!! Any guidance in what to major in that would lead to a good career would be helpful, or if you think i should stay in my present major choice, what careers? heres some info...

I was interested in psychology/psychiatry because I have a high aptitute for social sociences, literature, and its something i have interest in and that can be applied to many fields. I also thought I would enjoy/make good money in a career as a psychologist/psychiatrist. However, by reading many of these posts and from some research, it seems I was mistaken and that the jobs available are NOT high paying enough or are in enough demand to be worth the educational value, especially since it is not exactly a deep passion of mine, just an interest. And, unfortunately, a job with good money, hopefully eventually hundred thou +, and security is important to me due to the fact that my one passion in life is horseback riding and competing, an extremely expensive sport that i want to support in the future.

To help you out, I also used to be great at and love science, especially biology, but have always gotten good grades but had trouble with math. However, some bad science teachers in high school kinda killed science for me, but im sure that some good teachers could rekindle the interest and aptitude. I have been looking at careers in med, but dont know if i could quite handle the 8 years of school plus residency. I want a little bit of freedom in my job, so I might consider dermatology, dentistry/orthodontics or any other highly specialized form of medicine. I have always been interested in a career in law but dont know much about the different types of lawyers or how much work/money is involved.

In short, ANY ADVICE WOULD BE HIGHLY APPRECIATED.

Thank you so much.

They aren't paid enough; that's for sure. Mostly, Psych majors go back into Academia (teaching college students 100/101), have Admin Assistant jobs, or work in high schools. It just won't pay the rent anymore.

You got into good schools: the top ones I see, in terms of prestige, are Cornell, Oberlin, and Rutgers/BC.

From those 3: I would choose Rutgers (hesistant on Syracuse), since it is in NJ.. though bad community (don't get shot!)... and you are close to New York (if you want to intern at ibanks).

Why not go to a college that has some sort of horseback riding? Like Cornell?

"Horseback Riding
J. T. Oxley Equestrian Center is offering horseback english riding lessons. Lessons will be given for two skill levels: beginner ....... e-mail Ginny Grove at vs24@cornell.edu or call (607) 272-0152 for more information."

Anyway, med school is a lot. I read someone's app essay enumerating/describing his med school experience and it seemed like hell. The med. field doesn't have that much freedom .. as people expect. You have to answer to administration, fear being sued by patients, and are limited by your office/nurses/etc.

Dermatology would be doing a lot of ppl favors who suffer from acne, dentistry is a stable profession, hmm.

The 2 ppl who make the most $$$ out of Grad school/MBA are the coporate lawyer, and the investment banker.

The only medecine field that pays off is either biotech/big pharma or corporate healthcare.. like hospital CEO. <- the latter is people who are pursuing business + pre-med.

I'd read up employee surveys on Vault.com -- to see how much they get. $45 for 6 mo., and I periodically post what I find on CC.

Good luck!
