Looking at my Chances

I'm applying to:
Longwood University (first choice, my dream school)
Randolph College (too expensive)
Sweet Briar College (women's college where my mom wanted to go, too expensive, I don't get along with girls well)
University of Mary Washington (close to home)
University of Virginia (to appease my teachers)
Virginia Tech (to appease my teachers)
Washington and Lee (unsure if I'm actually applying, way too expensive)

I am:
Senior
Female
White

4.367 Weighted GPA
About 3.8 unweighted GPA
3rd in my class of 255
590 Reading SAT
730 Math SAT
620 Writing SAT
1940 Composite SAT
Taking October 6 SAT

Activities:
Art Club (freshman year)
Art Show volunteer (3 years)
Newspaper staff (senior year)

(I live in a very rural county and never have transportation hence cannot participate in extra-curriculars unfortunately)

Classes:
7th - Algebra I
8th - Geometry
9th - Honors English, Biology, World History 2, Adv./Honors Algebra 2, Spanish I, Art I, Gym
10th - Honors English, Spanish II, Art II, Gym
11th - Honors English, Spanish III, Crafts I, DE US History
12th - AP English, Mass Media (Newspaper, year long), AP Government

My school switched to a four by four schedule my junior year. AP classes are AB scheduling. Mass Media is year long so the paper can be put out all year.

Okay, so I only have 4 classes a year listed for 10th-12th grade. Well, that's because I'm a magnet school student. Or, as we call them in Virginia, Governor's Schools. I take dual enrollment math and science classes through the program. My classes there are:

10th - Foundations of Science (not a college course, we got an IT credit), Algebra II & Pre-Calculus, Biology
11th - Marine Science I (counts as Estuarine Ecology), Pre-Calculus & Stats, Chemisty
12th - Marine Science II (counts as Oceanography), Calculus, Physics

The magnet school is a merit based program and is supposed to accommodate students whose needs aren't met in their high schools.

I have kinda started panicking about applying to UVA because I'm afraid that I'm going to have an anxiety attack if I don't get in. The only person I know in my family who went to college is one aunt so I don't have any family ties to colleges or anything.

I honestly have my heart set on Longwood but I'm afraid it's going to look like "You could have gone to so many other amazing colleges. Why are you going there?" because it's not some big name school. The truth is that just the feeling I get from looking at pictures of the place make me go "This is where I'm supposed to be." I still need to visit but I'm pretty sure the minute I set foot on campus I won't want to leave. It's in the exact environment I want and it's under my student limit (I come from a high school of 1,200, I'd rather not go to a 20,000+ enrollment university).

My high school isn’t that good (it’s wishy washy not terrible but not great) but the magnet school is of course a plus that I’m hoping will bump up my chances at UVA (at least one teacher from the program went there though unfortunately I didn’t have any of them). When it comes to academics at the lowest I’m supposed to be around middle for my schools and for most I’m supposed to have a high chance.

Can anybody give me suggestions on Virginia colleges? Preferably rural, small town, or college towns. And preferably under 10k enrollment.

Longwood: Safety
Randolph: Safety
Sweet Briar: Safety (why would your parents even want you to apply to such an expensive safety when Longwood is more affordable?)
UMW: Safety
UVA: High match
VA Tech: Safety
W&L: Reach

I’m taking the SAT again this Saturday and hoping to get my scores on Reading and Writing up. Last time I took it, I was focused on doing well on my math and that was my only concern. I knew that most colleges superscore so I figured if I got well on my math the first time I could prep for the other two later. Plus, math is both my favorite subject and one of the majors I want. And I get bad anxiety which is why my junior year PSAT was a completely crappy score. I’d panicked while taking it because of the pressure.

And I switched from having Radford as one of the schools I was applying to to applying to Sweet Briar because it’s the better of the two. It’s just another safety. I can’t seem to find a good match for me that I like. My teachers want me to apply to William and Mary which I might try. Though I’m not a fan of being near the water.

Serenity Jade – Are you going to Longwood? My son goes there and likes it. His GPA wasn’t as high as yours, but he had good SATs, and very strong ECs (Eagle Scout, sports, summer job etc.). It’s not always about the numbers and good students should be well rounded.
