Does anyone here know or have any recommendations for a really good flute teacher in or around Philly? I'm looking for someone who preferably has a good track record for getting students into pretty good music schools/at least preparing them for college (if not getting them into top schools).

I've researched the faculties of colleges around here and thought about contacting Philly Orchestra members who I know teach privately, but from conversations with other flutists I keep getting the impression that you need to 'know someone' in order for them to consider teaching you, and I'm not sure whether the college instructors take on private students.

Also considering travelling to NY for lessons, which opens up so many possibilities of places to look for teachers that it's kind of overwhelming! If anyone has any suggestions or recommendations, I'd greatly appreciate it!

I live in the Philly area - when my daughter was in this situation looking for a new voice teacher a few years back, I contacted the Curtis Institute of Music - they were incredibly helpful and a terrific resource. If they don’t have someone on faculty there that can work with you, they know of Curtis trained musicians who currently live in the Philly area and take students.

Thanks for the shout out Mezzo’sMama, but I don’t actually know the local flute teachers, particularly not those who would be prepping a student for college auditions. Fluetz, are you new to the area, or are you just thinking of changing teachers?

Not sure is she takes undergrads privately, but we’ve heard very good things about Kimberly Reighley who teaches at West Chester U. May be worth a sample lesson. Good Luck.

Such a coincidence! I was just going to post this exact question myself and then saw it was already posted! My son’s girlfriend is looking for the same sort of flute teacher in the same area. To flutz: Did you end up finding anyone and what was your experience? Anyone else want to chime in with any suggestions? Many thanks.
