private teachers??

Hi, everyone, I've been a member of College confidential for about a year now, but I haven't posted much. Anyway, I'm a French horn player, and I'm a freshman at SUNY Fredonia. Lately I've felt like I'm lagging behind the other freshmen in my studio, mainly because I never had a private teacher in high school. So I was wondering, do you think it's worth it to take lessons over the summer? If you do, does anyone know of any horn teachers in the Syracuse/Utica/Rome area? Thanks so much!

why not ask your teachers?
have you applied to any summer festivals or other music programs? again, ask your teacher for some advice.

To expand on what mamenyu said, check the faculty listings at U/Rochester Eastman. I'm not sure, but Eastman may well have an attached community school. Other option is to check with the American Federation of Musicians Local that covers the area as they often have a list of members that also function as instructors.

I would also suggest speaking with your current instructor at Fredonia. It might be possible to arrange summer instruction directly with your current faculty if they are available, although often they will have schedules where they are engaged at festivals or other programs over the summer.

You should be able to discuss this with your studio professor. Are you getting 1x1 lessons with them? Ask if you are making expected progress and ask which summer teacher/program they would like to see you participate in. You want to have some consistency in approach at your level of development. I am concerned if at the second semester in your studio you do not feel comfortable discussing this with your studio professor.

I bet one of the horn players in the Syracuse Symphony must teach privately. It would be closer for you than Rochester or back to Fredonia!

Thanks for the help everyone. I'll talk to my professor about it and see what he says. It's not that I don't feel comfortable asking him, exactly, he's just one of those intimidating musician types haha. Anyway, hopefully he knows someone in the Syracuse Symphony. It's true, that would be much more convenient than driving back out here all summer! :)

Google it you will get many.
