I'm looking to transfer out of my current school.
My major is visual effects, specifically concept art.
Are there any good schools out there that have a great concept art/illustration program?
I'm looking for something on the east coast, I'm in VA.
I'd prefer a rural school.
I just got denied from VT. I applied there because of the beautiful campus and the
gorgeous architecture. So I hope that can give you an idea of what I'm looking for.
I'm not opposed to leaving the east coast, it would just be more desirable to stay here.
Also, I left SCAD. So please don't recommend that school, it was in the city and it was awful.

What is your budget? Will your parents pay for anywhere?

Maybe UNC Asheville?

Asheville does look pretty nice…
Nothing over $40,000- as long as I can get a scholarship to help out. Then it’s probably $30,000.

It’s much harder to get a scholarship as a transfer student.

Since you have a budget of $30k per year, then you probably should for either instate publics with good art depts or some of the lower cost OOS publics with good art depts.

How good are the art depts at various VA publics?

I believe SVA has a visual effects major combined with animation? I’m not too sure how good the major is, but the school’s located in NYC (providing great internship opportunities) and average price is about 30k (w/o dorms). But I wonder if you’re opposed to the city environment because of SCAD or just in general?
Just a suggestion~ Good luck

I do not know about the particular programs you are interested in, but Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond is the state’s “arty” school. Look at their website and see if they have what you want.

I visited Pratt, SVA, RISD, and VCU. I didn’t like the campuses and they were in cities so I felt very overwhelmed. I knew that they were not the right fit. I visited Ithaca, and that one was perfect, but too pricey. I’ve been able to easily find scholarships because of my portfolio- so as long as the school offers that type of scholarship.
I’m opposed to the city in general. As a strong introvert I hate the noise and it lacks the green that I want so much. And no, central park doesn’t is not enough to make up for those NYC schools. :)

Does James Madison have what you want? What about George Mason, which is in the NoVA suburbs and has a nice green campus?

I didn’t like GMU. I have plenty of friends there so I’ve seen every inch of it and was unimpressed, and JMU waitlisted me. I wasn’t thrilled with that campus either. VT and Kenyon are what I’m looking for. Except despite my great GPA (3.6) they keep turning me down.

Alfred University (NY) established in 1836

[School of Art](http://art.alfred.edu/) School of Art & Design

[Alfred University : Financial Aid : Information for Undergraduate Transfer](http://www.alfred.edu/finaid/transfer/) Financial Aid for Transfers Page

That looks pretty nice!

You might like AU, nice village of Alfred, NY, friendly people & small classes-know your professors. School of Art & Design is a NYS program, so in-state kids pay less. Some of the engineering majors are through NYS as well. College of Liberal Arts & School of Business are private programs.

No Greek Life, about 2,300 undergrads, Division III athletics, shuttles to Rochester airport at peak break times, buses to NYC at peak break times.
