Looking for help on critical reading

Im a sophmore that took the PSATs this past october and scored 65 in writing, 80 in math and a low 41 in critical reading...

the vocabulary is what is completely killing me as well as reading comprehension (thats basically what cr is :P)

any suggestions on how to quickly improve vocabulary without memorizing the dictionary?

thanks a lot,
Jack

Learning word roots and how to get the meanings from context can be helpful. As for reading comprehension I think that doing a lot of reading (books, newspapers, etc.) would work well long term.

yeah word root, i've just recently started to massivly consume issues of time magazine, but any suggestions on which newspapers to choose from?

NY times, Wall street journal(can sometimes be quite dull)

and in those papers I should look to read the political articles?

read all, cept for the market and investment part.....but u still can read them if u want to

money and investment. And i'm talking about the WSJ

Common vocabulary used on the SAT can be found in Princeton Review's "WordSmart" book, but studying root words AND prefixes can be an easier/shorter route to learning vocabulary.

As for reading comprehension pay close attention while reading classic novels in English class, because some excerpts are taken from these classics. Read, read, read magazines on your spare time. Popular passages come from magazines/newspapers such as Newsweek, Smithsonian, NY Times Science section, and NY Times literary.

Good luck! :)
