Hi guys! I’m a junior just starting to do my college search more in-depth, and right now my list of schools includes a lot of seemingly similar state schools. I have a few questions, and if you can answer any of the questions for any of the schools I list, it would be much appreciated! The schools are:
Temple University
Arizona State
University of Oregon
University of Arizona
University of Georgia
Ohio State
UW Madison
University of Minnesota
UT Austin
My questions are:
- Generally, how big are classes, once you start taking classes for your major?
- How easy or difficult is it to get the classes you want?
- What is the reputation of the career services dept? Is it usually helpful, or not so much?
- Are students at all competitive, or "cutthroat"?"
If it’s at all helpful, I’m planning on majoring in either psych or sociology.
Thanks!
Question 1 can usually be answered by looking at the Common Data Set for each school.
Erin’s Dad, thank you. However, the Common Data Set only gives numbers for all undergraduate classes, no numbers for more “specific” classes you’d take for your major. I can understand a large public school having large lectures for more general classes most students have to take, but if class enrollment continued to be huge for classes for one’s major, that would be a problem for me. So if anyone has personal experience with a school and can say, generally, how big classes for one’s major are, that would be great. Thanks!
For questions 1 and 2, you can see if the college has on-line class schedules. If the schedules show enrollment and capacity for each class, then you tell (1) how big each class is or can be, and (2) whether the classes tend to be completely full (may be hard to get into) or tend to have some space for later adds.
