Looking for Information on Admission to the Business School

My son has been admitted to MSU for the fall, visited and loved it. He is interested in studying accounting in the business school and understand that you must apply into the business school during your sophomore year. It is then a function of your GPA,, case study, etc to determine whether you gain acceptance. Looking for information from those that have been through the process on how competitive it is and whether I should steer him away from MSU and toward a school with direct admission to their business school. I wouldn't want to have him spent two years there and then need to transfer to study accounting elsewhere if he didn't make it into the program. Thanks for any information you can provide!

My son is a sophomore and will be applying this spring. I don’t think it’s highly competitive…as soon as I find the stats I will post them here. What is your child’s current GPA/ACT scores? My son does make dean’s list every semester so I am not worried at all of him making it in, but even if he was at a 3.0 I wouldn’t be worried about his chances. I’ll look for stats and call him today for more info.

I just checked your child’s stats on your posts and he should be a shoo-in for the business school as long as he studies… I wouldn’t worry at all about him getting into the business school. Truth be told, my son has said a lot of the classes are as easy as high school classes. I have a daughter at University of Michigan and she puts in way more hours trying to maintain her GPA compared to her brother and her friends at MSU. There are free tutors for accounting and I would recommend your son sign up for one as soon as they are available which might be before school starts. If he waits he’ll be out of luck unless someone no longer shows up for their tutor session. Also make sure he doesn’t overload his freshmen semester even if they encourage him to at orientation. If he has AP credits, taking one less class the first semester isn’t the worst thing so he can get used to college requirements and his new social life.

Thanks so much for the info and advice! My son is in the IB program at his high school and would hope he will have a bunch of credits coming in as a freshman but time will tell. Appreciate the info on the accounting tutors. Fortunately, I am an accountant so can tutor him in a crunch but will also be a good 10 hours away so he would have to be desperate!
Assume your son is enjoying his experience at MSU? My son is very sports-oriented, so it is right up his alley and everyone that we met on our visit was great. Still have a few schools to hear from but right now MSU is definitely up there on his list.

The one thing I would add to what has already been said is that accounting has its own GPA requirement that is higher than the normal Broad requirement. I am not an accounting major, but what I’ve heard from my accounting friends is that you need around a 3.7 in order to get into the program.

I’m a junior in Broad in so I can answer most questions.

I am new in this, so I am not sure if it is ok to ask TheSpartan regarding MSU in this thread, because I didn’t start this thread, please advise, thanks

Go for it or make a new thread, doesn’t matter.

Thanks,@TheSpartan, my son is an international applicant and has been accepted to MSU, pre business, he has also been admitted to UC Boulder, at this moment we are trying to gather all the information regarding both universities before we decide which school to attend, I would appreciate any information you can share with us, thank you

I am not familiar at all with UC Boulder, so I’ll just talk about MSU. What in particular does your son want to study? Broad is particularly strong in Supply Chain Management and Accounting, and really solid in Marketing. MSU as a whole and Broad in particular have a large number of international students (about 1/3 of Broad is international) so it’s a good mix of international and American students. Most international students live in the same residence hall too. Broad is recruited pretty heavily by most major companies as well.

That said, I don’t know very much about UC Boulder but if you have any more specific questions about Michigan State I’d be happy to answer them.

@TheSpartan‌ , my son wants to study finance, and which dorm would you recommend? Thank you for your input

Finance is one of the weaker departments in Broad, but if I had to guess I would say it’s probably around the same level as UC Boulder. Most international students live in McDonel (which isn’t bad), but I think the best dorm is either Shaw or Snyder-Phillips.

@thespartan I am currently a freshman at MSU, and I was wondering if you could tell me how competitive it is to get into Broad since you’ve been through it. My GPA first semester was a 3.2 and I got a 2.5 in CSE. How do you think my chances are of getting in currently, even though I have only been through one semester.

It will depend on the rest of your precore GPA after you take accounting and econ, but as long as you keep everything above a 3.0 you should be ok.
