Looking for insight into Susquehanna..

I did not find SU to be a suitcase school. I found that a lot of SU students were from outside of the area, so there were still a lot of students on campus over the weekend.

Hi Everyone! We had a wonderful visit today to Susquehanna University. Beautiful campus, well informed, enthusiastic guides for private tour, impressive programs
my DS had a great “feel” for this one. We have been to a dozen schools and this has moved to top of the list. Would love to hear more about it!!

My daughter is a freshman there and absolutely loves it. She feels a part of the community and has joined numerous clubs. The academics are challenging and she is excited about what she is learning. I had been leery of the location, thinking that since it is in the middle of nowhere (and it really is in the middle of nowhere!) that the kids would get bored and say that there is nothing to do. However, the school makes an effort to have numerous activities planned during the weekend—there always is something going on. One good thing about the campus—over 90% of the students live on campus, so there is a sense of continuity among the students. My daughter says that the seniors love the school as much as the freshmen.

Every student participates in the GO Program –(Global Opportunities). It’s an immersion experience in a culture different than the student’s own and can be completed in either the US or abroad. There are 3 different programs:

 1. Go Long—90+ semester long program abroad
 2. Go Short – 20+ short term faculty led program (each at least 2 weeks) held during summer or during breaks
 3. Go Your Own Way – students design their own program based on their interests and their advisor’s approval.

Many kids will do more than one program, such as studying abroad for a semester and then take a Go-Short program during the summer (such as studying art history in Italy). The financial aid transfers to the program, so it is easy for the students to participate. The school won the 2013 Andrew Heiskell Award (which I guess is like winning the Nobel Peace prize for colleges) for their GO program.

This is my 3rd daughter in college and I think her experience is one of the best. I’m really impressed with the school. My husband and I met many other parents during freshman orientation and it was surprising how many of them had also attended Susquehanna. Their pride in the school was evident and so many of them said that “Susquehanna made me who I am today.”

Thank you for the reply Bloomfield
I hope you don’t mind I sent you a PM. Anyone else like to share your experience with SU?

My son is an aspiring Freshman. He applied ED to SU as it was his first choice. He deliberated quite carefully as we had visited approximately 12 schools over 18 mos or so. He hopes to be hearing in the next week or two. Of about 5 schools (of the 12) that met all his criteria and he could “picture himself at,” only SU kept surviving without significant negatives. He would have one as his tentative #1, then another - each time not quite 100% enthusiastic. Once or twice I recounted his reaction when we visited SU last Spring: that he liked just about everything about it. I asked him to consider whether ED was right for him and he called his SU Adcon to discuss. As a result, we scheduled a second visit, overnight, classes, etc. early this application season. It sealed the deal.

I anticipate ED working out for him. He’s transitioned from not getting energized about college to enthusiastically awaiting word from SU and ready to go. There is something very personal about the place. I’m happy to share any info, etc. with anyone.

So far, I’m a believer.

Thanks for your reply JJG! I know we connected after all of your visits and glad to see your son went with SU for ED! We applied EA since we must compare offers but it is certainly at the top of the list. GOOD LUCK and keep us posted!!! Someone had posted the President’s Welcome speech to students this year
I was tearing up. I want to go back to college myself!

My son (and I) had a noteworthy visit to SU the last week of August. He was expecting to like SU based on its website. Beautiful, remote wooded campus. We had a wonderful, forthright discussion with the admissions officer, followed by a 1:1 tour during which the heavens rent asunder. Son held a large umbrella shielding the enthusiastic, attractive, female sophomore tour guide (she had a dislocated shoulder and an arm in a sling). With the rain pelting down on my umbrella, I couldn’t hear much of what they were discussing, but S seemed engaged.

Decent dorms. Passing through a residence common area, S was swarmed by some very jazzed freshmen who introduced themselves, wanting to know where S was from and what he (and I) thought of the school. Palpable enthusiasm. Didn’t get to see or try the food. Some truly excellent facilities, including a brand-spanking-new science building.

One of 4 schools on my son’s ‘High Interest’ list. (We were about 2/3 through our road trip, and when we got back to the car to change out of our dripping wet clothes, he matter-of-factly said that we could stop visiting schools.)

He applied EA on 1-Nov. Received a phone message yesterday from the admissions officer to expect a reply in the coming week. Cautiously optimistic. If accepted, will definitely return for an overnight.

Our D is a freshman this year. She seems to be happy and has made many new friends. We also found a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere when we visited.

The food rated raves from her when we did the visit. It has deteriorated to “meh” in the months since school began. I believe that would have happened at any college.

expatCanuck, Keep us posted
your review back in August was part of our inspiration to visit! Love the photo! My DS also applied EA on 11/1
no phone call that I’m aware of but we are certainly hopeful. Good luck!!! My fingers and toes are crossed for both our kids!

My son received a thick envelope today from Susquehanna.
:)

Woohoo!! What a fabulous way to start the holiday week! Do share when he opens it :)

Oh, it was indeed an acceptance. My son didn’t seem surprised by the acceptance, but he was pleased with the merit award (as were we).

My daughter received an acceptance letter and very generous merit award in today’s mail. This thread has been very helpful as we don’t know much about the school (haven’t visited yet). I was flipping through the Fiske guidebook which had great things to say about the school although it also mentioned that its strengths were its business program and sciences, neither of which is really her thing. Any comments?

What a wonderful Thanksgiving
DS received first college acceptance to SU with a very nice merit award! Sooo happy! LOVED the video link they sent via email to the annual Thanksgiving dinner hosted by the faculty. Anyone else hear yet??

My son received his acceptance right before Thanksgiving. He is very excited - he’s already thinking roommates, ride-shares home and all of the things that come next. The whole family is happy to see him so excited.

Hi all! I am an international student from Australia, thinking about the business courses that SU offers and I was wondering how SU treats its international students- are there any disadvantages of being one? Also, for grad school, is there any chances of going to a top tier one? Thank you!

Just curious everyone, what do you consider a “really nice merit award”? We’re trying to compare the different colleges and what they offer. I understand if you don’t want to say, we were just wondering what the range of $$ SU gave out for their awards.

Thanks for your help!

I consider a “really nice merit award” (a.k.a. ‘discount’) half off or better.
We didn’t get that.

Daughter received a very nice financial aid package, composed primarily of a Presidential scholarship, renewable for 4 years and equal to over half of the cost of tuition. I’d like to hear from anyone that has some insight into the business school. What’s your experience been with professors, classmates and classes themselves. Also, how are the opportunities for internships and assistance with job placement? The generous package she received makes this school well worth careful consideration. Thanks for any info you can share!

Hello all
Is SU still in the lead? Anyone attending Accepted Students Day? We are hoping to but a handful of other options fall on the same day
will have to leave the choice up to DS.
