Hi there!
I’m so appreciative of all the advice here.
My son is applying to a good number of schools for a BFA in Acting. We’ll wait to see where/if he gets in to make decisions. However I am concerned about finding safeties for him. I guess that would be non-audition BA programs. Or auditioned programs with a generous yield. He is looking for high quality acting training in a supportive environment. His grades and scores are very good, so that shouldn’t hinder his search.
Would appreciate any feedback.
Thank you!
UMBC in Maryland has a BFA that you audition for after your freshman year. Everyone starts as a BA. Great academic and artistic scholarships too! They have good training with some very cool productions. They built a river on the stage to do Eurydice, had an amazing production of Rhinocerus a few years ago and regularly perform new works, which Is a great experience for the students to be able to work on brand new character development. They’re a KCACTF school as well. And Baltimore/DC has a great theatre scene!
That sounds amazing. Thank you for the feedback. Is it hard to get into the program after freshman year?
It may be a little late to apply for some schools? My D chose two BA theatre non-audition schools - American U and Temple U - because both of them have MT/Acting programs that you can potentially audition into as a sophomore.

My daughter attended UMBC. Several of her friends made it into the BFA and some others didn’t, even after trying a couple of times. But all found their way. For her I really liked that she could work with the teachers and show them her hard work ethic as she wasn’t the most confident auditioned at that point in her journey.
Thank you for all your replies. Does anyone know about Muhlenberg? I’vesite heard it’s mostly Musical Theater, but from the website it looks like a great Acting program.
@meohmyoh Muhlenberg has been very well known for their acting program for years but it’s a BA and there’s no limit to the number of actors admitted. So well known + no audition + no limit admitted = lots of college actors have it on their list. I heard they have over 250 Theatre majors… in a school of 2,200 students. With so many actors, there are pros and cons. Some students have said you can go through 4 years of auditioning for shows as a Acting/Theater major and never even get into a show as ensemble - so that is a drawback. Still if you love being around theatre people it might be a great fit since there are so many there.
American U is an audition school for entering freshman.
You might want to look at Hofstra. It’s non-audition with the option to audition for the BFA sophomore year.
