We will be spending 3 weeks on vacation in the Minneapolis to Chicago area in June with our S (currently a sophomore). I am looking for good schools to visit for a kid who will probably score very well on his SAT's (2100-2200), is a B student (can't motivate him to do better), would love a school with a good spirit (comes out for football, and other sports teams), mid size, good history, poly sci program. We are from the boston area and will probably not get another chance to visit that way again before he graduates.

Any thoughts? Trip is primarily for vacation, but would like to visit some schools while we are there.

I am a DC transplant living in Minneapolis. I also have a son who is headed east for school next year. Here are some schools that I know of in the area:

LACs:
Macalester
Carelton
St. Olaf
Lake Forest
Lawrence
Grinnell (Iowa)

Universities:
Minnesota Twin Cities
Wisconsin Madison
Northwestern
U. of Chicago
Drake
DePaul

A caveat: It’s pretty early for you to begin the college search. Our first college visit trip on President’s Day Weekend during my son’s Junior year was kinda a bust. Ironically, it was to Boston (we have a house on the Cape).

Momofdb - Thanks! I know it is early to be looking, but we may not get to the area again and I want to get S excited about a couple schools outside those he would not normally think of (primarily east coast).
