Thanks for all the replys. We have discussed career options and she thinks that she would like to teach @ the college level. She did look into Art Ed, but after several discussions with HS and College art educators she decided to focus on becoming the best artist she can be in undergrad and then decide from there about a MFA or MEd. I also recognize that she may very well decide to change majors as I and many others did. So we are happy that she is not focusing on an Art only School where she would definately need to transfer if she changes her mind. She does want to stay on the east coast and is comfortable with her current list. We are just looking for any info. any of you may know about these specific programs. She went to a 2 day College and Careers program @ RIT this past summer, but didn’t get to meet the Ceramics Professors. She has been to Syracuse twice and likes the facilities and the Professors she met there. She went on a tour of New Paltz in June with the swim coach and was invited back for a recruit weekend a couple of weeks ago. The campus is nice and it is within an hour or so of NYC. She did get a tour of the department and talked briefly to a professor, but that woman is leaving. The only rankings I can find are for Graduate Programs.

I do not view Alfred University’s location as a disadvantage. Alfred is a lovely charming village with very friendly people. The staff, the professors, administrators, etc I have come into contact with are extremely outgoing & helpful. I presently have a Junior there and she has never been bored: always going somewhere to Corning, Syracuse, Rochester, Canada, etc on some type of excursion!

AU publishes a monthly booklet with all the events happening on campus. For such a small school, I found it very impressive. Many clubs & organizations, no Greek Life, housing for all 4 years, merit aid, need-based aid, Division III Athletics. Small classes, so know your professors! Alfred University was established in 1836 & is still under 40k/year.

There is bus service to NYC at peak break times & a shuttle runs to Rochester airport at peak break times. So there are ways to get back & forth! My child does not even have a car & we have never had to go pick her up for breaks. She has always found a ride through the University - sponsored ride service to get back home.

Admissions to the School of Art & Design is very competitive, if a NYS resident you will pay a lower tuition fee as program is a public program. I would suggest a visit soon, as there are advantages to applying early in the process.

Thanks for all the info on Alfred, I appreciate it!
