Looking for summer sublet in New York

Both of my kids, one musical and one not, have internships in lower manhattan this summer and we're looking for housing. I'd prefer to have them live together (a one bedroom would be fine, since my son sleeps on the couch anyway) because I assume it would be cheaper to house them together. Anyone have any brilliant ideas? We're talking probably June through most of August.

Craig’s List, and have a friend in NYC verify the legitimacy of the renter before you pay or give confidential info.

Another option would be to check with the conservatories/colleges on Manhattan as many students offer sublets for the summer.

I think NYU rents dorm rooms over the summer.

I’ve mentioned this elsewhere on CC, but [VRBO is Vacation Rentals By Owner](http://www.vrbo.com) has monthly rentals in NYC. It is probably a bit pricier than a sublet, but they are reputable. I have used them for rentals in Europe.

And as mentioned above: (i dont think they can beat these great rates)

Thank you all. I’m aware of the dorms, but am really looking for a sublet because of the two kids.

I second the Craig’s List suggestion - and we’ve never used Craig’s List for anything besides this. D was involved with a show in NYC that required 7 weeks of rehearsals over the summer when she was in middle school. We sublet an apartment with another family, (mother/daughter), for that period which we found through Craig’s List posting - there were actually several available at the time we were looking as a lot of folks with young children in Manhattan head out of the city for the summer. We had great luck - it was a terrific place - the tough part was convincing my daughter that her first place in NYC would definitely not be like the place we were subletting!

Guess we’ll just have to mosey on down to the Big Apple and start hitting the pavement! And yes, I’m sure that what we find will be a little shocking to my relatively pampered kids. Can’t wait!

I’ve personally used vrbo for a monthly rental in Santa Fe and it worked out extremely well. The rate was competitive and the selection was better than expected. You could use vrbo to get a sense of what to expect prior to hitting the bricks.

Bassmon-If you do look at the VRBO site, do not be put off by the daily rates listed. Click on the links to the individual properties and they will frequently list a much more attractive monthly rate.

the prices right now look astronomic on alot of the properties on VRBO and on Craigslist…I’m assuming that the closer it gets to June, these will start coming down??..I can’t imagine that there won’t be a glut of sublets available given how far out we are now and there are just SO MANY listed…

Last summer DD posted hers on facebook and on the school’s off-campus housing website. Have you checked there?

I can’t get onto the off campus sections of the NYU or New School websites because my kids aren’t students there, so I’ll call those departments directly next week.

A couple summers ago my daughter’s friend did a summer internship in NYC and was able to rent a room in the Pace dorms (down by ground zero) although she was not part of a Pace program.

Pace no longer allows non-enrolled students in their dorms for the summer…and the OP has two children looking; would be exhorbitantly expensive since the dorm situations in all the NYC colleges are priced per person

Son lives in NYC. He has always found apts. and sublets on Craigs list. He has found the best selection to be available starting around 30 days before he needs a place.

The Webster Apartments ([The Webster](http://www.websterapartments.org/)) This place was recommended by someone who used them and suggested it when my daughter had a NY internship. She ended up staying with a friend but I contacted this group and it seemed like a good arrangement.

If you’re still looking PM me because I’ve just heard about a sublet through my own university channels.

glassharmonica: just PM’d you.

glassharminica: just PM’d you again. Did you get this one??
