Looking for Ways to Afford Education in the US (I am from BC)

Hi everyone,

I am a Canadian citizen from BC looking to study computer science at Georgia Tech next year. The total cost a year is 45k, which is a really big stretch for my family. I was wondering if any BC students (or any Canadian student) studying abroad has any experience with StudentAid BC. The maximum allowance from StudentAid BC is 16k/year of interest-free loans, for which students looking to study at Georgia Tech are eligible. However, my father currently works in the US with a TN and my mother and sister will be joining him in California in June. Will my Canadian citizenship still qualify me for the StudentAid BC loan packages, even though no one in my family will be living in BC or Canada when I start university (in September)?

If anyone knows of any other methods that can help pay for university in the US as a Canadian, please share them, too. I am aware of private loans but would like to avoid them due to their hefty interest rates.

Thanks!

Will you be moving with them in June? I think this is a question you will need to ask directly of StudentAidBC. Generally speaking, Canadian provincial financial aid usually is determined by the province where your parents have lived most recently for 12 consecutive months. I am not familiar with how it’s done in BC but it’s probably pretty easy for you to check on that.

If you move to California with your parents, you would be considered a resident for tuition purposes and would be eligible for California schools resident tuition.
