Hello all,
I'm a rising sophomore at Columbia College. I'm pre-med and now am thinking of taking a few years off to explore consulting. I know that some of the big firms do recruit at Columbia, so I was curious as to what steps I could take to set me apart.
1. What steps can I take as a sophomore to better my chances of getting an internship for next summer?(2 years from now)
2. What majors would look good on my resume?
3. What sorts of things do they look for in your application? Specifically, clubs/work/previous internships?
4. Are there any sites similar to college confidential but specifically for people interested in business and/or consulting?

Any other information on the field would be great! Thanks.

What type of consulting? I’m assuming from the business thing you are meaning management consulting? MBB and the like? There are plenty of sites, especially they help with the case interviews. Sites such as managementconsulted.com and caseinterview.com are a start. The big things they look for are grades, involvement in extra curriculars, leadership, intelligence, thinking in the way that solves business cases (look at getting involved in clubs and case competitions at columbia) and brand names. Being brand name universities and work experience. So you have the university already with columbia, look into well known companies for internships, too. Major doesn’t actually matter. Prefered ones though are anything to do with maths: Economics, business, Engineering, science. But it doesn’t actually matter. If you can fulfill the requirements, your major is fine.

High GPA, internship doing something like business development, strategy, finance, or even marketing.

Econ, business, stats, math. But they take a wide range.
