looking to shortlist small liberal art colleges

please assist in suggesting some small liberal art colleges in and around cities in the east coast and west coast

West coast - check out the schools in the Claremont Consortium (Pitzer, Claremont McKenna, Mudd [if you’re into engineering], Scripps [women’s college], Pomona) as well as Occidental in and near LA. You’ve got Lewis & Clark and Reed around Portland, and University of Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, which is near Seattle, too.

Without knowing any other considerations, here are a few in Northeast/Mid-Atlantic:
Maine: Bowdoin is about 20 minutes from Portland
Connecticut: Trinity is in or near Hartford, Wesleyan is @ 20 minutes from New Haven
Pennsylvania: Swarthmore, Bryn Mawr, Haverford are all within 1/2 hour of Philadelphia
New York: Barnard College in New York City

Can you give some stats, major interest, and financial situation? There are a LOT of LACs, especially on the east coast. We can help provide a list that fits if you give more info.

Agree with INTparent. There are tons, and as my D has just applied to many, I know quite a few. If your grades and GPA a aren’t so great, Goucher is good, near Baltimore. If you are top notch everything, look at Carleton and Bowdoin. If you are still high in stats look at Kanyon, Oberlin, and Bates. A lot of LACs tend not to be too close to cities. The cream of the crop for being on the outskirts of a big city are probably Swarthmore and Haverford, but you need stellar everything to thinkmof getting in.

These online Newsweek Articles discuss a fair number of LACs: “The 25 Most Desirable Urban Schools”; “The 25 Most Desirable Suburban Schools.” Also consider Union, Trinity, Macalester.

You might find this thread useful. It’s long, but features a lot of different LACs of all levels.

Budget? Will you need financial aid?

Scratch Macalester, not in your preferred areas.

Also Carleton, Kenyon, and Oberlin are not on either cost, although all are great LACs if you want to expand your geographic range.

You should be able to find some here: http://ctcl.org/

If women’s colleges are OK with you, add Wellesley (suburban Boston) or Bryn Mawr (suburban Philadelphia). Bryn Mawr is in a consortoum with Haverford and Swartmore–both mentioned above. Students at any one of the three can easily register for courses at one of the other schools.

I know of Hollins University (Women’s College) and Roanoke College. Both are in Virginia near a smaller size city, Roanoke. People I’ve met/worked with who studied there seem to have great experiences!

Might look at Holy Cross-very good LAC located in mid-size Worcester which is 1 hour from Boston. HC has beautiful campus and meets 100% of demonstrated financial need.

There are many more if you stretch the definition of “in and around cities” (or move inland a bit).

Davidson is quite close to booming Charlotte, NC. Eckerd is in St. Petersburg, FL. Guilford is in Greensboro, NC (also booming). Drew, in Madison, NJ, has easy access to NYC.

Without knowing your stats etc., I would direct you to the USNWR list of LACs below. I don’t put a great deal of import in the ratings themselves, but it is a good list of schools. You can then research to find ones that meet your academic, financial, geographic needs. http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-liberal-arts-colleges

Public LACs are good for lower stats, lower budgets, or as safeties.
