Looking to Tranfer after switching from Bio major to comp sci

Hello! I’m a student at CSU Chico but I’m not returning after my freshman year in favor of attending 2-year community college in my area in order to transfer to Cal Poly, SJSU, SDSU or a UC. I’m currently a bio major but I have come to realize that it isn’t the major or school for me (it’s a great school, don’t get me wrong! Lots of opportunity for those who look for it, it’s just not the atmosphere for me.) I’m switching from majoring in Bio to majoring in CS and I am finding myself back at square 1. All of the classes I’ve taken since HS have prepared me for a major in Bio and now i’m finding myself kind of lost in navigating my new major. I haven’t been able to have a meeting with a counselor at my future CC because I’m still at school in Chico so i don’t really have a form of advice in terms of what classes I should take and what I should prepare for in general. I was hoping to get some advice from people who have been in a similar situation? What classes should I take, any tips? What kind of questions should I be asking?
Classes and stats so you guys can have a better gauge on my situation:
-AP Calc AB in HS (2 on AP exam but passed with a C)
-AP US (3 on exam)
-AP eng/comp (5 on exam)
-AP Bio (4 on exam)
-AP Macro (3 on exam)
AP Econ (3 on exam)

  • AP psych (3 on exam)
  • stats @ chico
  • Satisfied/ in progress GE’s: A1, A4, B1,B2, C1, D1, D2, E
  • 1 yr college general chemistry( 2nd semester in progress)
  • current GPA: 3.62

I really would appreciate some tips or advice, especially in terms of what classes/ direction I should be taking. Thank You!!
PS: the cc I will be attending is Los Positas Community College

You need to look at Assist.org for your community college to see which courses are required for a CS transfer. Some of the CSU GE’s do not satisfy the UC GE’s so you will need to come up with a plan with your CC advisor to determine which courses may be lacking.

Different UC’s also have different major requirements for transfer, so it might take longer than 1 year at your CC to complete all courses depending upon your target schools.

Below are some links for SLO/SJSU/SDSU CS transfer requirements for example:

https://admissions.calpoly.edu/computer-science.html

http://info.sjsu.edu/web-dbgen/artic/tpg/template-22.html

Also AP credit can be used for some but not all Major prep requirements. Again meeting with your CC advisor whom is familiar with transfers is your best bet.

Also note that CSU’s give local CC transfers priority and some schools like SDSU and Cal Poly SLO highly favor local CC transfers which makes them tough admits.

Note that CSU GE closely resembles IGETC. So if you can complete CSU GE plus have enough foreign language for the UC version of IGETC, that can be helpful if you transfer to a UC.

Note that CS is one of SJSU’s most selective majors.

For UCs, http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/transfers-majorcan be helpful.
