Loosing scholarship

I’m currently a sophomore with 4 year full ride scholarship.Due to my unexpected illness I will loose my scholarship . The academic year is in progress and after accepting the perfect scholarship all the others are gone. Where and how can I get help to pay my tuition in my emergency situation. I love the college and I’m a very good student. My family can’t help me financially.

How did you lose it? Was there a GPA requirement?

Have you appealed to the school, shown them proof of the illness and seen if you can get the scholarship reinstated?

If you can’t afford the school without the scholarship, you might need to take a leave of absence, work fulltime and save up money.

How far away are you from the required GPA? Have you asked them if you can retake the failed classes at a community college to raise your GPA?

Find out all of your options.

I didn’t fail anything academically. I have a newly developed health issue that takes away my Air Force ROTC scholarship. You cannot continue if your health is not perfect

Did you contact the financial aid office?

When will you lose the scholarship?

Not yet, I have to wait til Tuesday. I’m afraid that is too late to get any help since the academic year is in progress

Did you file the FAFSA? What is your EFC? Does the school require the CSS Profile for institutional financial aid? When did you find out you would be dropped from ROTC?

I did file the FAFSA. I got my scholarship early so I didn’t look into all other stuff. I saw my doctor last Friday

Sorry you aren’t commissionable. I presume you’ve gone through full medical process, not just a diagnosis? Have you checked with other services to see if your issue isn’t disqualifying for them?

Obviously want to protect your privacy on what the issue is but some medical issues disqualify you for one service selection but not others.

Alternatively, talk to the school and see if they have options to help you stay since this wasn’t an academic issue.

Thanks for answering. The diagnosis is confirmed and my military career is definitely over. My biggest fear now is that the school won’t be able to help me continue this year because all sources for 2016/17 are already didtributed

Which state do you live in and where is your school located?

Are your parents considering a Parent Plus loan?

What is the Cost of Attendance at your school?

When do you have to pay by or withdraw?

What is your FAFSA EFC?

Taking a semester or year off isn’t the worst thing. It could be fun.

I have no answers for you, but I wanted to say that I am very sorry for your situation.

I would definitely go on and meet with the FA office first thing on Tuesday.

I hope you can find a solution.

This is very unfortunate. It seems ADA does not apply to ROTC because of the requirement to be ready at all times. First thing Tuesday, you should visit your financial aid office and see what your options are. Since the school year just started, maybe there were was some scholarship money allotted for someone that had a sudden change in plans. In the meantime, you may want to get a copy of your parents tax returns so you can be prepared to provide information on Tuesday. If you have to withdraw from school, it will be very unfortunate but remember this is only a set back. As @rollout said, taking a semester or year off isn’t the worst thing. Seems you will need to re-define your path. Someone who earned an ROTC scholarship has shown commitment and leadership, qualities that many colleges would be seeking in a transfer candidate. Best of luck to you. A big bump in the road but no doubt you will land on your feet.

I would talk to the school about a gap year and research one year jobs and scholarships for next year from the school. Be polite, patient, and flexible with the school’s financial aid office and maybe there is something they can do for the 2017/2018 school year.

I had a friend who was paying his own way run out of money and he took a gap year and worked a full-time job for a year, lived as frugally as possible, and came back to finish his degree. Not your original plan but it is an option if you want to stay at that school. It also gives your parents time to do FASFA for next year.

He can still file FAFSA for this year if he hasn’t yet. Same 2015 income tax information is going to be asked for on 2016/17 FAFSA and 2017/18 FAFSA.

I agree with all others to meet with FA on Tuesday, armed with 2015 tax returns, W2 forms and asset information.

See if they might have scholarships available or need based aid if you qualify.

@mommdc

He already filed his FAFSA.

It won’t help you for this year, but if you are in certain STEM fields that are desireable to the US government/military, you might want to look into the SMART program as a potential way to fund your education in the future.

You have already been told…talk to YOUR college first.

If there is no way to get the funding you need…please ask them for a medical withdrawal so that the registered courses will not appear on your transcript ever…and you won’t be charged at all for this term.

Good luck tomorrow…yours is truly an extenuating circumstance…and I’m hoping the school can help you.
