LOR for summer research

So I am applying for summer research programs and they require 2 letters of recs, at least one being from a professor.

I am planning on getting one from my GSI for a course I took.
~ In my email to him, should I ask him to have the things co-signed by the professor of the course? How would he do such a thing if the LOR is an online submission or interactive PDF?

I am planning on getting my second from my research adviser. She is simply a staff research associate in the lab, but I interact with her in the lab on a daily basis; I've talked to the PI maybe 4 times including the interview.
~Would it be reasonable if I asked her to have the letter co-signed by the prof?

Thanks for the help guys.

For the second one, I’d just ask the PI himself/herself. As long as you’ve shown good results and have been helpful in the lab, I’m sure the PI can write a great LOR will be able to put any of your accomplishments in a better light and in more context. If necessary, tell the PI that you’ve worked extensively with this research advisor and he/she can also comment on my abilities.

my two cents.

Thanks HitMan,

and does anyone know if it is the norm to give your recommender a copy of your unofficial transcript?

I second HitMan. As for the transcript, if your PI cares for a transcript s/he will ask you for one.

I’ve often seen my research adviser sign for my PI on things like the form for my badge, so could she write the letter and submit it under the PI’s name?

Ahh I should just grow a pair and ask the PI to write them. The thing is I’m applying to 6 programs and they all require different methods of submission, and I fear the PI may be too busy to attend to them. On top of that he wants me to work in the lab over summer, but I’d rather not.

what the professor or instructor might do is ask you to use the letter service at the career center. a professor sends your LOR to the career center and it will be kept there for several years.

of course, there are fees associated with this method. typically, students use this service when applying for graduate school but it works too for summer research programs. i am using their service at the moment since im applying to 10+ summer research programs.
