Los Angeles Internships - advice please!

Looking for internships in the Los Angeles area for Fall 2007.

I have already completed one year of college at Harvard, (prospective English concentrator & VES Film secondary fielder).

I'm looking for something hands-on in film production, tv production, music recording. I have quite a bit of experience in all these fields.

I know LA is the place for entertainment, but I'd love to find an internship/entry-level job that would provide more of a hands-on experience (i.e. not just copying files)... so I'm guessing this would come from a smaller company. If it pays, well, that's even better.

Thanks for any advice/leads I can get.

Have you researched LA internships through Harvard (career services, professors, etc.) who may have contacts with people in the field)?

i've tried my old academic advisor but i'm not really making much progress... even though she has quite a few contacts... i havent been able to track anything down in the LA-area from the career office yet...

I have two kids studying/working in the same field, and the way that they found their internships/work experience was through networking, but it was relatively easy for them since they're/were already in a school with programs that led them to meeting many professionals who work in the industry, both in LA and in NYC. You just have to keep asking everyone who you know - even friends or parents of friends who might be out in LA or might know someone out there who is working in the industry - again, it's all about making the right contacts. It's an industry that depends alot on networking -"who knows who" kind of thing.

Also, I would try to go through your career center, because they should have a list of different production companies out in LA that take interns. It might be difficult to secure a paid position at this point in time, since you're still a student, but even an upaid internship can be very worthwhile, because it builds up the resume, so that by graduation time, it can lead to another position with good pay.

thanks for the advice - I have been asking all my friends and friends of friends and even people I've never met; I've also used lists/contacts from the career sites at harvard.. (I think its a little harder though, seeing as its not a prominent film school, you know?)

I'm still wondering though, if there are any internships and/or companies out there that I'm missing that are just well-known for providing a great internships and experience in the industry?

***Also, I keep an updated resume of mine within Universal's and FOX's databases - but anyone know the likelihood of them actually ever contacting me?

One option would be to try to get in touch with Human Resources at the various studios out in LA. Also, there are some great film-related websites - studentfilms.com being one of them providing info on links to internships. The William Morris agency has an internship program, I believe, that you could look into. Another possibility would be to check on the USC film school website, because maybe there are some links to internships listed. In NYC, there is basically a production co. on almost every corner, and there are so many, that it would be almost impossible to keep up with them. There are also large studio companies that are represented as well, so my kids both interned and large and small companies - but again, that's in NYC.

Perhaps it would be helpful to contact Universal and Fox, because they probably have internships, along with SKG, Dreamworks, The Weinstein Co., Disney, 20th Century Fox, Fox Searchlight, Focus, etc.
