Hello, I am new to these forums and came across this site while searching desperately for transfer answers. I apologize for the incoming wall of text :(.

I graduated from a catholic private high school in California in 2007 with a mediocre 2.8 GPA, I believe SAT scores were about 1800 but I can't remember off the top of my head. I was accepted into all of the Cal States that I applied to as well as UCR but, I really wanted to go to either UCI or UCLA so I decided to take the Community College to transfer route.

With my newfound freedom allowing me to choose my classes and my schedule, I admittedly began to slack off, spending time with friends instead of going to school. I took maybe 16 units with mediocre grades (~2.5GPA). This eventually lead to me dropping out of college entirely, lying about class schedules to my parents, and simply enjoying life in whatever way I wanted to at the time.

However, as time started to pass, the novelty of having unlimited free time at the expense of my education began to wear off and I found that I have dug myself into quite a deep hole. The peers that I have been partying and hanging out with for the past 4 years are now graduating and my parents are becoming less and less patient by the day.

I have truly had a desire to return to school and finish my education however I cannot find the motivation to do so. Knowing myself the way I do, I believe that the only way I'll be motivated to continue my education is to either:
A. Attend a professional school with a certification program for a profession such as nursing
or:
B. Skip the community college system and go straight into a private school or cal state and finish my degree that way.

Between the 2 options, I'd prefer working with the latter, however finding a school that accepts lower division transfers has proven to be extremely hard. This is where I was hoping these forums would come in. I did my best to include all relevant information as well as a background so those who are willing can answer my questions with as much background information as possible. So I guess, basically my questions are: Are there any UC's, Private Schools, or Cal States that regularly accept lower division transfers that I can apply to for the coming Fall Semester? If not, what would you do in my particular situation?

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and I appreciate any feedback that anyone has to offer.

I don’t think any UCs or Cal states take lower division transfers, but lots of privates do, which ones are you looking at?

You could also contact the publics and ask if you can disregard your college record and apply as a freshman. You might not be able to - I know UCLA doesn’t let you - but there’s no harm in asking!

Thanks for the response! I’m primarily looking at any private university within ~25-30 miles of Glendale, CA so LMU, MSMC Nursing, Chapman, Woodbury University etc… I’m not too familiar with the private universities of California so I’m sure I’m missing a lot that I could potentially be looking at.

I’m aware that a few CSU’s such as CSULA and CSUF have made a few exceptions and accepted lower division transfers during certain semesters but I’m looking for a University that accepts lower divisions transfers regularly.

If you’re thinking of doing nursing than that’s a whole different story, most of them have tons of requirements for transfers that can’t be completed in just a year. I’m doing nursing too, but the only schools I looked at were on the east coast so I can’t really help you there =\ Why not just check the admissions websites of the schools you want to go to?

Go to collegeboard dot com and use their college search program. If you click on “California” (the second page of the filtering questionnaire) and submit, 21+ pages of results show. Though many of the colleges are obscure (ie: Yeshiva Ohr Elchonon Chabad/West Coast Talmudical Seminary in Los Angeles, CA.) But pretty much any college in California will show up on their list.

Personally, I think your reasoning about skipping CCC and going straight to a private college is flawed in that the school itself won’t provide the motivation. You are quite a bit late in your plans to try and get into a private at this late date and the privates that would accept a 2.5 gpa transfer are going to be fairly desperate for students which probably says something about the overall quality of the student body.

Save yourself (your parents?) a ton of money and attend CCC until you become a junior-level transfer. You can rehabilitate your gpa there and then potentially transfer into a good public or private college. Also, I would argue that with your lackluster HS grades and your equally lackluster college gpa, that you are probably not ready to plunk down giant dollars for a private college experience (and no CSU or UC is taking lower-division transfers and certainly not sub-2.6 gpa transfers).

My suggestion would be to take 1 or 2 classes at a CCC next session. Pick a class or two that you are interested in, know you can do well in, and practice success in college. It is a particular set of skills that you need to practice right now–and that happens inside of you (and private or public or CCC doesn’t matter, so do it somewhere convenient and affordable!).
