Lots of Questions

Hey. I have a lot of (random) questions for any Penn students/graduates who are willing to answer. Odds are that if you are at Penn, you’re happy with everything there, but I’m really looking for some genuinely honest responses. Thanks…

1) How cutthroat is Penn? Are most kids really obsessed with grades and studying?
2) How flexible is the curriculum? Are there a lot of required courses that can bog down someone without tons of AP credits?
3) How are the networking and career services? Will they work carefully with every individual until he/she is happy?
4) How “nerdy” is Penn? Is there a lot of diversity to the student body (I.E. can find a popular jock, a super-nerd, etc., etc., on the same floor?) I visited Penn, but I feel like whenever I visit a college I get a bad picture because the kids who do the tours are usually overly outgoing/annoying girls, effeminate guys, or aspiring actors and politicians (Sorry for the stereotype, but it’s been that way with EVERY visit of mine. I’m sorry if any tour guides read this and are offended). My point is just that I didn’t get a good feel for the student body on my tour.
5) Do you get to fill out a questionnaire to help pair you with a suitable roomate, or is rooming completely random?

I have more questions, but I can’t think of some of them right now and I don’t want to bore you.

Thank you so much for your help.

6) (sorry) Does Penn offer a lot of study-abroad opportunities?

1) Depends on the school...

Non-science College: No curve = no competition
Science College/Engineering: Curve but everyone knows they're screwed raw score-wise so no competition
Wharton: Depends on the person (there are a few, but not as many as you'd think)
Nursing: if you need to ask...

2) Again, depends entirely on the school...

College: lots
Wharton: Less so
Engineering/Nursing = not much
Dual Degree Programs: Every course satisfies something

3) Career services at about every school is bs. Mock interviews may be good, but I've never attended one. More or less, all that they provide you with is a website to search for intern/job openings.

4) You'll get the whole mix at Penn. From the computer games are my life to the what's a computer crowd, they're all pretty much here.

5) Nope. Completely random. Worked out great for me though.

6) Haha, YUP. Pick any country in the world. Penn probably has at least 2 options there.

Flexibility :D

"Are there a lot of required courses that can bog down someone without tons of AP credits? "

Penn doesn't give too many course credits for APs (mostly placement), so everyone is in the same boat.

thanks a lot guys

TripMC - as far as college visits maybe you could hang out a bit in the student union building and ask around there what other students think of the school to get a less scripted pov.
