My son is a freshman in SFS this year. He loves everything about the school: the classes, professors, friends. However, when I heard from him today, he told me he's reading 1000 + pages a week and up every night till the wee hours with no end in sight. I know he'll figure it out, but just wanted to hear from any current students or recent grads if this is normal and if there is an end in sight.

That’s pretty much how it is in the SFS, but it will also pretty much be like that in any top school. He’ll get used to the workload though, and find better ways to manage it so he won’t be up extremely late each night.

Thanks for the response. I did hear from him today and he finally got some sleep and was feeling better. He also admitted that he was doing his usual procrastination and that he was going to have to change that! I guess he learned his first college lesson:)

Some of the SFS courses can be very reading- or writing-intensive. By asking around, or reading the description, the student can usually figure out how to not take more than a couple of these per semester.

In addition, study habits and lifestyle choices in freshman year can often present a challenge. It’s worth it, though–and congratulations on having a student in SFS!
