You can’t count on that scholarship coming through. And even if you do win it, it’s only $500, and it’s one time only, so you’ll be stuck in the same situation next semester.
Are your parents going to take the PLUS loan?

@mommdc, I think OP loses $3k of grants after this year (one time grants), so I think her net cost will be closer to $15k/year (about $10k/year after the federal student loan).
Ok. OP, how much do you owe for this semester? How much is the bill you have due next week and how many bills will you get this semester? Is it broken up into months, thirds, etc?
I know, but it’s just more in the sense that every little bit counts,if that makes sense.
12/10/2016 is the last day I can accept my Fall 2016 loans. For the Session I am in, August 25th is the only billing I see because the calendar with the due dates only mentions Sessions A and C and their due dates.
They’ve broken my awards up by the Semester. So for my Vantage West Scholarship, $500 dollars went into this Semester, the $500 goes for the next Semester. Same for my ASU University scholarship ($1,000 for this semester and $1,000 for next), and that was also applied to my NGSC Award ($5,092 for both semesters)
If that’s not what you are asking, let me know. I think I probably misunderstood your question.
If you don’t met the deadline, then you get put into the Payment Plan automatically.
The bill total is $6,720 ($2,365.00 for Meal Plan, and $4,355.00 for room).
Ok, and that is without the direct loan and the Americorps grant, right?
So that will bring you down to about 3300 (6720 - 2750 - 600) or about 2700 if the grant is per semester (my first number is assuming it’s spread over two semesters).
So how are you paying that 3300? Will your parents take out a PLUS loan? Are your parents paying out of pocket?
Love, thanks for the update. As you know you are still in need of money to attend Barrett. As I understand it , you have 6000 per semester to pay either out of pocket or via loans. You are being offered the UNSUBSiDiZED Loan only (2000 or 1000 per semester), a Parent Plus loan, and you have an Americorp grant for 1216 (606 per semester) Your parents are unable to pay anything out pocket. Is this an accurate summary of your current situation?
$6,720 - 1/2 of $1,212 means OP needs approximately $6,114 for fall and spring semesters. OP needs a job to cover spring books, travel, and miscellaneous expenses.
OP, you don’t have a choice. You need to accept both unsub and sub federal loans. Then you need to find out whether your parents can pay the balance, which is about $3,364 per semester. If they cannot, they need to apply for the PLUS loan. If they are denied, you’ll get another $2,000 in unsub loans per semester, bringing your balance to $1,364 per semester. How will you pay that? If your parents can help with laundry, travel, and books, a job, living frugally, and a payment plan might get you through the year. Next year, however, poses a significant problem since you will be losing some of your scholarships.
You also need to be very careful with how many hours you work. Not to be mean, but I think you will find the school work quite challenging and then there are your scholarship responsibilities.
I don’t know why you insist on taking this route. I don’t see this ending well.
ETA - if you were not offered a subsidized loan, you need to add $3,500 for the year to your current shortfall.
@imwiththeband where are you getting your numbers?
The total Direct loan for freshmen is $5500, and EVERYONE completing a FAFSA can get it as long as their aid doesn’t exceed the cost of attendance. This would be $2750 a semester.
The Direct loan amount of $5500 can only have $3500 be subsidized at the most. That depends on the student eligibility. This student is likely not eligible for subsidized loans…so would get $5500 a year in unsubsidized.
Thanks for the clarification @thumper1. I was unsure whether a student that didn’t qualify for a sub loan could get that amount in unsub loan.
So OP, ignore my ETA comment.
Quoting OP.
“I also did not accept any loans (I was offered the Direct Unsubsidized Loan and the Parent PLUS Loan)”
@thumper1 . See quote above from OP. Your post is exactly they reason I’ve asked OP to confirm. Throughout this saga, she has repeatedly said it is an unsubsidized loan.
Apologies for muddying the water, but the original post shows $13,184 in awards, which sounds like more than tuition+fees, even accounting for $750 for Barrett (unsure if thats semester or annual).
Would the school not have applied any overage to the room/board? Where did that money go?
flatkansas, she says she owes room and board in another post, and gives an amount. The just above 6k quote that people are working with.
Is she going to be able to pay for school or not?
That’s what we’re all trying to figure out. Even with direct loans, she’s over 3k short each semester… and that’s just THIS year.
This has been the consistent question throughout her threads. Yet she never gives a direct answer.
Yup.
@romanigypsyeyes I get that she’s quoted what her current bill is. "The bill total is $6,720 ($2,365.00 for Meal Plan, and $4,355.00 for room). "
My question is, she claims a total of $13,184 in awards. This semester tuition/fees is $5,092, plus $750 for Barrett, which totals $5,842 . Half her awards would be $6,592. So if they credited at least half her awards for this semester, where did the rest of that money go? Don’t schools usually just apply it to the rest of your bill (ie. room and board)?
Yes but it would’ve been applied to the bill already. Perhaps there were other fees… don’t know.
ETA: the asu ngsc scholarship gets adjusted to meet unmet tuition needs: https://scholarships.asu.edu/scholarship/31405
The overage may be her stipend or tuition and fees are higher than quoted on the website.
