Low AP Score: Potential Bio Major

I just checked my AP scores and was sad when I saw I got a 3 on AP Bio. I had an A all year, understood concepts, and got multiple 5s and 4s on various in class and prep book practice tests. I will mosy likely major in Bio, but will this low test score affect my admissions?

I have strong ECs, and 4.0 U/W and 4.3 W and am going into junior year with a 4 AP load. My target schools are UCLA, Berkley, and USC.

Would a high SAT Bio subject test score offset the low AP score I got? I am very worried.

Thanks for all the help guys!

A 3 will not hurt or improve your chances in any way. I know plenty of people who got 3s and 2s on AP tests and still got accepted into UCLA and Berkeley! You probably wouldn’t receive much credit anyway even if you had scored higher. Still, if you’re paranoid I would recommend taking the SAT subject test. Otherwise, under the assumption that you have solid extracurriculars and will write good essays, you’ll have a very good shot at all of those schools.

Thank you so much. I felt so relieved after reading your comment. Why wouldnt there be much of a difference between students who score 3, 4, or 5?

Probably because you’re majoring in biology and you’re planning to get credits for biology! At best, a score higher would allow you to skip an introductory class (which you may still able to skip), but it won’t actually give you credits for a biology course.

UPDATE: I got a 750 on my Biology M subject test. Should I retake it and try to get a 800 on M? I am going to take AP Enviromenal Science next year, so I will take the Bio E test the summer of 2019. But for now, should I retake the Bio M in August and try to get an 800? Would that score help me considering I got a 3 on the AP Exam?

Just a curious question: Do colleges prefer one test over the other?

Again, anything helps. Thank you so much, you guys were super helpful last time!

AP Classes
Fret not…colleges are much more concerned about your grades in those classes as opposed to the AP tests.

Why is that?

  1. Doing well in a class shows you can learn over the year and work hard over a period of time. That is what they want in college.
  2. Not all HS have many APs.
  3. Many people take AP tests senior year which is too late for admissions

For example, Stanford says:
Students currently enrolled in AP courses are not required to submit AP scores as part of our admission process. AP scores that are reported are acknowledged but rarely play a significant role in the evaluation of an application. Grades earned over the course of a term, or a year, and evaluations from instructors who can comment on classroom engagement provide us with the most detailed insight into a student’s readiness for the academic rigors of Stanford.

Where does this leave you?

  1. It tells you that you cannot place out of those classes in college…you will need to take them in college like many many other people do.
  2. Do not self-report your scores
