I just checked my AP scores today, and all of them are mediocre. I am a rising senior who took 8 AP exams, and I got 3s on all of them (macro, psych, US gov, calc BC, physics C both, english literature, and computer science A). This is strange as I thought I got a 4 or 5 on most of them. If any, what effect will this have on my college decision in colleges such as OSU, Purdue, Georgia Tech, UW Seattle, CWRU, and Virginia Tech? I am applying for the computer science major, so should I report any of these scores? Please let me know my best options at this point.
Check with the schools in question to see what credit they accept for a 3 in the rigorous courses (like B/C or Physics C) and also what they say about reporting scores as supplemental application information (do they encourage it, for instance?). Most applying to competitive schools will report with a 4 or 5 but not a 3. However, you took eight AP’s this year which is a rigorous load and you took some tough ones among the AP’s (BC, Physics C, English Lit). I’d err on the side of caution on this one but not rule it out. Get good advice from a guidance counselor or similar.
@JBStillFlying Thank you!
At Purdue the threes may still give you some credit towards graduation.
That’s good to hear!
@momofsenior1 From this point forward, I’m keeping my head high for college admissions. Already, taking eight exams in a single year was a worthy feat in itself. Thanks for all of your comments!
You took too many exams. Taking a lot of exams means it’s almost impossible to do well in them.
Colleges would rather see 3 5s than 8 3s. Quality before quantity.
Don’t submit the 3s when you apply. Submit 3s when you enroll, if they give you credit - at that point, you’ve been admitted.
No college except (I think) Cornell and Georgetown will require you to submit all AP scores. You still have hundreds of colleges you can apply to.
Congrats on passing 8 exams! My ds applied to several of these schools and no school wanted his AP scores (most didn’t look at them). He decided on OSU, which has a very liberal AP acceptance policy. He ended up with 57 credits. If you are taking Calc 3 as a senior, you’ll be done with the Calc sequence for CS majors at quite a few schools, which will be nice. Even though most CS curriculums are pretty prescribed and it isn’t very easy to graduate early, it can make your courseload in college much more manageable. I’d definitely consider that when you are deciding. Honestly, although you should feel good about passing 8 exams (that’s intense in one year!!), I’d probably not submit them until you are admitted unless it’s required. Agree that it would have been better to get 4s or 5s on fewer (but doubt it will really hurt you). Good luck with your decision.
@MYOS1634 Thanks for your insight. Some of my colleges will accept 3s, so I will submit them.
Only submit them to the one college you choose to attend, AFTER you’ve been admitted and decided to enroll.
@jeh3924 Thank you so much! It was quite an accomplishment. I might consider not submitting them right away.
