I have a student who is interested in these combined programs but he is worried that his junior AP exams are not going to go too well. In one class the teacher is a new AP Bio teacher and in the other (stats) the AP teacher has been gone for more than a month due to illness. They are required at the beginning of the year to pay for the test but I don't know what happens if he just chooses not to take the test. Does it matter if he gets a low score? Any advice?

most bs md programs dont accept AP scores! so no worries. dont submit the scores if they are not good.

Even if they don’t accept the scores, does it have a negative effect on your admission decision? Do you even have to send AP scores?

I thought AP scores were automatically included in your transcripts from school. Aren’t they?

If you are really worried about doing poorly in AP exams, do not take them. There is no requirement to take AP exams for BSMD admissions. I do not know if it is still true but at least a few years ago you could even show up for an AP exam and if you thought it was too hard you could abort the exam. Yes, some high schools do put AP scores in the transcript, so the best bet is not to take the exam.

Don’t some schools use the AP’s as the final exam?

You don’t have to take the ap test. It shouldn’t affect your admission at all if you chose not to send it in. If you scored a 1 or 2 don’t send them in; regardless they won’t count for anything.

@raycmr ap results are not out until july so there is no way it can count for final exam when school is over by first week of June in our area.

Thanks for the input everyone. I will recheck with the counselor to see if transcripts can be requested without AP scores on it.

AP scores do not matter in the bs/md process (believe me, I did bad on some of my AP’s). Some schools do have a comprehensive score list when they send out transcripts, but even then, scores don’t matter unless the school specifically asks for them. the only thing it matters for credits AFTER you enroll. Of the 24 programs i applied to, only one specifically asked for scores.

If he has low numbers of AP classes he simply will be a weak bs/md applicant. They look at rigor not only grades. However, low score would also be a negative. He just need to take classes and do his best. And Stats is so easy that my D. has decided not to take so that she would have an easy A in college. She took AP Calc instead. At her HS, the number of APs they take was limited to only 3 / year. But colleges are aware of schools like that, so she did not have a problem being accepted at bs/md programs.

I still have not gotten a response back from the counsellor about the details of the grade reporting system. @Miamiadap I sort of think like you that low AP scores could make you look weak. With his AP teacher being absent in one class, and a total newbie in another class - how do you decide? The BIO exam this year is being totally revamped so it’s not like he can even gauge himself as to his performance. Ugh!

It is hard to assess. At this point, your S. has to trust his own assessment of his situation and choose what seems to be the best option at this stage. What else one can do? The most important is NOT to go forward with any kind of regret, just tell yourself that whatever was done, seemed to be the best under circumstances. More of this type is coming. Staying positive does help, sorry for cliche, but it is true.
