Low Class Rank for Ivies?

How much would a class rank of top 10% hurt one's chances of admission to the Ivies and other top schools like Stanford, MIT, etc. Can SAT scores make up this difference? (to what extent)?

Thanks in advance :)

I guess if you have a sat score of 2400, then you would be okay (jk).

Top 10% isn't that bad at all. To my knowledge, about 40% of valedictorians got rejected last year or something like that by ivies.

what about top 12% :)

It is relative to the competitiveness of your school.

What about top 10.3 % in a strong school (not phillips exter or stuyvesant style) that sends about 5% of the class to ivies every year? (With double the amount being accepted but not going)

You'd think that such a student would be able to calculate such a obvious question themselves.

The quality of the school is the simple answer, but it depends on what else you have. I continue to be amazed at how many people boil down their prospects to a single number. It is the total package. Look at the school's acceptance characteristics. It is never based on one number. Things can balance other things. The issue is do you have the stuff to do that, if it is not quite up to the standard.

just get good grades and dont worry about it :)

I don't understand this question. isn't 10% supposed to be GOOD?

^not for Ivies I thought (esp HYP)

Wow....top 10% is good enough. Enough with the insecurity on these boards...seriously.

I thought being in the top 10% was an honor. I guess it's about being in the top .0001% these days. :)

Well when I see the decisions pages, everybody is like top 5% at worse

This Q totally depends on your high school....In our competitive NJ public, if you are below top 5% you can kiss away most of the Ivy league.....maybe GT to Cornell, but that's about it....so it depends.....

That's why I love my school...
No rank, no percentile, NOTHING!

Many students from the elite private schools are admitted to multiple Ivies even though not in the top 25% of their graduating class. (This is obvious as some elite preps have over 40% of each class admitted to Ivies with about 35% accepting the offers & matriculating at an Ivy). This confirms the posts above that wrote that class rank is important in the context of the quality of your specific school.

Nope, sorry, no ivy for you. The cutoff is 10.0%.

Just kidding. Don't worry about that kind of stuff, work on your essay(s).

if the top 13/330ish people have 4.0 GPAs
and we send maybe 5-7ish people to top schools each year
would that be considered competitive? (we're also ranked like 600something)

It also depends on the size of the school. Being top 10% in a class size of 200 is a little different than top 10% of 800. The colleges do look at the size of the class and the strength of the curriculum in the classes in their formula.

As an example, if a student is in the top 5% of their class, but did not take any honors or AP classes, that holds less weight than someone who has challenged themselves with their courses. This is why it is a complicated formula that they use to get to their decision.
