Would having a bad class rank kill one's chances of schools like HYPS? I have a mid 2300 SAT score and stellar EC's. I'm still in the top 10% of a very competitive school but after seeing all of these valedictorians and top 10 ranks, I'm a little worried.

It would help if you were at the top of the class, even a highly competitive one but I don’t think it would break the application.

Anyone else?

Ur in top 10%…dont worry

If you come from a HYPS feeder school then being in the top 10% should be fine. From a different type of school, it probably would be a problem. Since we’re still talking <10% selection rate it’s a reach no matter what.

What do you mean by “very poor?” Many HYP-admits (excluding those from feeder schools) will be val or sal, or at least in the top 1-3%, of their hs class.

I do decently well in school but am not the typical 1-5 rank you see among HYPS admits. I’m pretty sure I’m just as academically capable, though. Our school ranks very differently. I’m in the double digits.

How does it rank differently?

As long as you’re in the top 10%, your rank isn’t going to hurt your application. It won’t be a particular boost as everyone at these schools is in the top 10%, but you don’t need to worry about it.

Unlike the 4.0 systems most schools use, my school uses a 100 point scale that penalizes you for every point. I must admit I did not try nearly as hard as some of my peers and have no excuse for that. However, I still did not slack by any means.

The rest of my application should be top quality.

^Then I doubt it’ll affect your application. As long as the rest of your app is strong, which it ought to be since you’re applying to ivies, you’ll have as good of a chance as everyone else. Good luck!

Class ranking should be on a 100 point cumulative average scale. Its more competitive that way. At my school students have to have a waited percent of 98 or above to be top 10%…thats more definite than saying just have a 4.0 GPA and you’ll make top 10.

^How?

OP, you are expected to do well in your environment, including your school’s ranking scale.

WHoever started this thread is on crack. Rank is not THAT important, and top 10% is incredible. You guys gotta stop being so “dorky” its ridiculous, maybe you didnt know the importance of school when you were a freshman, relax, take it easy. Your life is not made in highschool, same goes for everything.

I am making one argument, and I’m repeating what Redroses, a college counselor that frequented CC this summer, would tell applicants. But I’m sure it’s much less legitimate than your adament “You’re wrong.”

I think you should try but don’t put a lot of weight on it. If you got in, fine, but if you don;t you should have some other backups.

I’m definitely not on crack. If you worked as hard as I did, you’d be concerned over a potential weak spot in your app in a pool of perfect applicants.

stop looking for complinents and just shut up!
