Low college gpa

Ok so I'm a senior this year at FSU (Fayetteville State University) and will be graduating this Dec. but my GPA will only be in the 2.4-2.5 range and only one class catered to my future career goal which is Speech Pathology! My major is Speech-Theatre because my university didnt have a Pathology major so I went with the closest thing! I havent taken the GRE yet but plan too. I'm really bugging out cause I want to attend grad school really soon but the admissions requirements say 2.5-3.0 miminum soooo have I really screwed myself and should I just go another semester to increase my GPA or graduate and face the consequences later????? I need answers and any advice/comments are welcomed!

Thanks in Advance to All!

While your field may be different, graduate admissions are generally extremely competitive. In most cases an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 is the posted minimum - but this is simply a way for the graduate school to filter unqualified applicants. The department or program will usually have a much higher minimum to be competitive; 3.6-3.7 is not uncommon.

You need to sit down with the professors who will be writing you LORs and get some straight talk on the realities in your field.

Good Luck!

ok thanks for your input/support!

The further you get from college, the less weight your GPA holds. I worked in my field for four years after a mediocre showing in college and now I am a grad student at my top choice university. Have you thought about working in an SLP practice? Even if you just volunteer and gain exposure that way, it certainly couldn’t hurt your odds when it comes time to apply for grad school.

Thankyou so much! I needed to hear that! I was thinking about doing an SLP internship so if I do well there i’ll earn a postition…but what was your grad school process like, your gpa, and your field of study?

My process was surprisingly smooth. I applied for a variety of schools including UPenn, Duke, UNC, Harvard, Michigan, Minnesota, Texas etc. I only received a rejection from two of the 9 I applied to. When I got to interviews, I found that the admissions committee hadn’t viewed my grades. I applied for Microbiology programs and my GPA was 3.29 (which is very low compared to other applicants). Hope that helps.
