Hi
Student has an EFC of about $2,000. How likely is it that one of the SUNYs will give her enough so that she only has to cover $2,000 out of pocket or is that unusual for state schools? And if they do “give” her enough, will some of that aid be in subsidized loans?
When we’ve run NPCs for various private schools it’s been very discouraging; EFC ends up much higher than she can afford. I don’t think she’ll get accepted to schools that meet 100% need. Trying to find her best financial options.
The SUNYs are great in taking care of tuition. If this student qualified for the Excelsior, it will take care of any gap from NY TAP and FAFSA PELL in the tuition. It is a last dollar award, however, that only goes towards tuition.
Room and Board, travel, supplies, books, living expenses are a whole other matter. The Direct Loans can cover most of that other than room and board.
Try the NPC for schools like Albright college, McDaniel , Manhattan College, St John’s, Fordham. For the schools that are commutable in distance, so indicate. It’s difficult to get a full ride, but if stats are good, close to full tuition is possible.
What are test scores and UW gpa? How much can ( and are willing). student and family pay towards college? Is there s family business in the picture? Are parents living together or divorced, remarried?
The answer to your question is that if she is looking to have a residential experience at SUNY it is 100% unlikely that she will receive enough money that she will only have to pay $2000 out of pocket.
Full Tap 5165
full Pell $6195
Loan $5500
SUNY Credit ~ $1500
total aid ~18,360 leaving a gap between 4-7k for a 4 year SUNY.
Regarding Excelsior, OP would not receive excelsior because Excelsior is a last payer that will kick in once TAP and Pell have been exhausted. There is also a huge drop off in how much money one will receive in TAP once EFC is above 0.
OP’s affordable option is a school where she can commute within the CUNY (if she is in NYC)/SUNY system as tuition and fees will be covered without having to take out loans.
Is family eligible for any of the NYS opportunity programs- EOP, HEOP, SEEK, College Discovery? Please remember opportunity programs ask for income/assets of both custodial and non-custodial parents.
Thanks everyone for the info - very helpful! I’m not familiar with the financial aid piece and any advice is welcome.
This is not my student; I’m helping an acquaintance’s daughter.
She has told me that her EFC on FAFSA 4caster is $1,800. NPC on SUNYs are around $15,000 but I haven’t seen the specifics so I’m not 100% confident that the calculations have been correct. She is not eligible for EOP/HEOP. She will qualify for Excelsior.
I’m not sure what the family can/is willing to contribute yet but think she’s willing to take out $5,500 loan.
Student is first-gen, latino. UW GPA is 92. SAT is 1220. Good extracurriculars. She lives in NYC area but doesn’t want a city campus so CUNYs aren’t a great option.
She’s open to SUNYs. She could commute to schools like Iona, Manhattan, Manhattanville, Fordham. Also open to other private schools in CT, MA, NY.
She’s also concerned about application fees and guidance has told her she won’t qualify for fee waiver. Is this true? If she reaches out to schools directly is it likely they will waive app fee?
