Will my high class rank and sat scores show colleges that my school has a insanely rigorous curriculum? I checked the school profile and it doesn’t have any information about the grading scale :(.
I have a 2310 SAT score, 3.7 Weighted GPA, Class Rank 17/509.
Will colleges know right away that my school has a rigorous curriculum and grading scale? I go to a public HS though.
I plan on going way OOS so colleges will probably never heard of my school.
Does your HS use Naviance? Your Rank does put your GPA into context (and provides a scale for colleges to use).
Upward trend on those grades? Schools cut people a bit of slack for lower grades in 9th and 10th grade. If you are headed ‘downhill’ that’s less desirable. And only on CC would a 3.7 be considered a low GPA!
Since adcoms are usually responsible for ‘territories’ they do get to know the schools from which they receive applicants over time - but there is no way to know what a particular adcom knows about your school. Presumably, your class rank and test scores speak for themselves in terms of your ability. Since there is nothing you can do about this, I suggest you check the Common Data Set for each school you are applying to (Section C) and see how you compare to admitted students. That’s the best information available on where you stand.
Many universities a maintain secondary school database (in fact, high schools often provide annual information sheets to Regional Admissions Officers) that permits GPA - class rank correlations. Accordingly, admissions offices are likely to understand that, for you, a 3.7 GPA might be appreciably better than it superficially appears. Moreover, your excellent SAT results complement and bolster this conclusion. I wouldn’t be overly concerned, were I you.
No, our high school doesn’t use Naviance.
The reason I’m worried is because our high school recently changed the grading system in 2013 since an A was easy to get in every class. I’m worried that college adcoms will not know this and look at the old grading system. I fear that since I go to a public high school, they wouldn’t think it will be just as hard as a competitive private school.
Oh and the school profile has no mention about the grading scale :(. My GC’s are really lazy.
