low GPA high SAT good extra cirric tough classes

my GPA is a 2.8 right now but i've taken a lot of tough classes like AP history AP bio chemistry computer science honors english (which doesn't help my gpa at all) Pre-calc and spanish III

i'm a junior (rising senior..you guys just read my junior classes)

my extra cirric include:

paid internship at george washington university for opthalmology
20+ hours of community service at NOVA hospital
football (only freshmen year)
worked in the same job for 2 and a half years 25-30 hours a week
built the set for wizard of oz and was part of the running crew (only junior year...)

i can write a really good essay so that part is basically in the bag...

so what are my chances of getting accepted into a state college or something? a college like christopher newport university (in va) or virginia commonwealth university?

oh and i'm also Egyptian...if that helps any haha

Edit: oh yeah and my SAT I score is a 1840 on my third attempt

my SAT II bio M score is 650

and i want to do pre-med/bio major (headed towards medicine)

a lil advice or help would be nice? suggest community college or a really easy college to get into....

you have a decent shot at Virginia Commonwealth University and George Mason University. I'd say you have about 50/50 shot at those schools. You should get into Old Dominion University and Christopher Newport University. especially christopher newport university even the kids with the worse stats at my school get accepted to Chris Newport.

Out of the schools I suggested you should go to VCU if you want to do med because they are affiliated with Medical College of Virginia so hopefully you can get in A LOT of volunteer hours at the hospital down there.

Also you could go to Northern Virginia Comm. Coll. for 2 years and then transfer into UVA or Will and Mary... but you have to keep up a fairly high GPA... a much higher GPA than your high school GPA.

Also, just out of suspicion do you know how hard it is to get into a med school? Just asking...

yeah i hear stories of people who basically live like monks during their undergrad years to get into the top med schools...i have planed on doing that...recently i can't really considering i work 30 hours plus a week during the school year and i barely have time for anything else :( such as school work...

i have however saved up enough for 2 semesters of undergrad at college so i'm hoping that those two semesters i'll spend my entire time just studying...few parties, not much time for anything else...if i get accepted into a college i'll do everything in my power to get the 3.8 (which is harder to get in college than in high school...i know)... i don't want to share why i want to be a doctor so bad but i really do...

your post has really reinforced me tell ya the truth...haha the fact that i have a chance kinda lifts my hopes...i don't want to be stuck in a rut for the rest of my life...

That's a high SAT score?

Well the SAT score is "good" as that is above the national average, though well not up to par with CC's heavily skewed average.

well i'm still a high school senior like you so i haven't looked a lot into med school admissions or know a lot about how they work...

but it seems that to get into a good med school you have to maintain a very high GPA and have a high MCAT... those are very important... but then unlike college admissions your extra curriculars** become very important as well... they want to see you have a TON of volunteer hours at a hospital, shadowing a doctor, and all that type of stuff... i think for med school admissions this matters A LOT so if you plan on just studying all the time while you are at college this won't work because you have to be doing something to show you have a very strong interest in med school... just taking the courses and getting high marks isn't enough.

i suggest you post a few questions on the pre-med board to get some answers. because those guys (well the ones who are alredy in med school or college) know what they are talking about, unlike me.

**really ECs aren't as important as everyone makes it seem on this site for under grad unless of course you are applying to a top college... which a lot of kids on this site are... but for a lot of tier 2 and almost all of tier 3 it doesn't matter as long as you have the grades and test scores

By College Confidential standards it's absolutely atrocious... by normal standards it's pretty good.

kind of like being surrounded by super models all your life and then being thrown out into a regular environment and realizing not all girls are super models...

That's a high SAT score?

okay compared to all you smart people my SAT score is a piece of ****. but in my opinion it's pretty good considering i'm not trying to get into harvard, stanford, or any other super crazy colleges...sorry i'm not up to your standard...average is 1500 right? that's what i hear so i'm "slightly above average"

Edit: and yeah I think i'm set in the extra cirricular area when applying to med school because this internship i have is basically garunteed for me every summer vacation and as i increase my education they give me more and more responsibility and i shadow doctors even more until i finish med school and they automatically accept me into their residency program...

don't ask how i got it...cuz i'm still shocked i got it...

how'd you get it? sign me up lol

haha well i've known the professor/doctor that is leading the research project all my life...so he basically hooked me up..they only got me and another high school kid into it...yeah i don't think he want's to add anyone else to it though sorry :/

lol i was just kidding that's pretty lucky though

Hey, don't worry, I had a 2.3 and VCU still took me...But I had taken the AP US and AP European histories my junior year and got 4's and took the Environmental Science, World History, and Government, all of which I passed, the first two with 4's and govt, which I failed for the year with a 3. So whereas I I received an F for a final grade in high school govt., I have already exempted POLI 103 in college...

Christopher Newport is another university that I know a ton of people going to. It varies from people in my condition, to the 2nd ranked girl in our 600 person class went there. But everyone in the top 10 went to ivy league or UVA/ william &Mary...Just don't screw up your senior year, and just really focus on the first semester and you can get into places like VA tech and JMU easy.

Did you know that saving up for two semesters of college on your own will look amazing?? Definitely include that! I think you have a great shot at VCU & Christopher Newport.

You should really consider V-Tech, too.

I am pretty sure you would get into VCU, I'm in the same boat with you. 1650 on SATs (not great but better than some of my friends going to JMU and Tech this fall) 3.3 gpa and great ex- curr. VCU is one of my top choices along with Mason and CNU. I would have to say tho, right now CNU is much tougher to get into that VCU and Mason. it has changed very much from a safety school to a reach for many students. I am also looking into ODU as a safety, and VT and JMU for reaches

Quit being a jackass u did well on the SAT playa, these nerds are just jealous they aint going to get all the gynological tail you'll be getting as a doctor...mmm fishy

The old national average was like 1021.
You could go all B's and you'd prolly beat that.

I think you would need to raise your GPA higher to get into George Mason.

I don't see why H. English is a tough course. 1/3 of the freshman take AP History.
And I don't know how you're language system works but Spanish III is from where most freshman at my school start.

I'm not trying to be rude or harsh like the other people. Even community colleges in NYC require a middle ninety average.
