Low GPA High SAT

I always tell my kids that I'll only pay $45K for a top college, but like most parents, I'll change my mind if they find a good fit and it seems to make sense. Be honest with your parents now!

you have a very strong SAT and SAT II...but your GPA is too low and your lack of AP's isnt helping either. I suggest the CC plan and then transfering. Plus UC schools have a plethora of asians, so unless ur the cream of the crop you're gonna have a tough time gettin in after high school. Work on your EC's too. Nearly everyone that applies to any college has EC's and a w/o these ur app immediatly get dumped in the ever growing rejection pile...

ps. tell ur parents about ur GPA..its better if they hear it from you

oyeh forgot to add..you got one more year (well actually half a year because of college applications). try taking some AP's senior year. They'll definetly raise your GPA if your school weights them. Plus squeeze in some EC's: Pick up a sport, join school clubs (SADD,Interact, Beta Club, etc.) Also take one more SAT II. Most people that do good on the SAT II US usually do good on the SAT World History. Just some tips. hope i helped :)

guys I really hope I can be honest with them but if I don't get the living c*** beat out of me I will be praying every day and night. My parents are very liberal and really love me but regarding this matter, a 3.0 is a no-no.

Would 2300 help me get into UCSD at least? (I checked every single thread on the SAT secton regarding the may test. spent at least 20 hours here in 3 days and currently it looks pretty good I must say)

all of these are great info that will really benefit me. thanks again for spending your time to reply and help me out ^_^

...uh im assuming you're instate, because if you're not then you have no chance.
uhm for UCLA here are the stats:

avg sat:2110
* 97% in top 10th of graduating class
* 100% in top quarter of graduating class
* 100% in top half of graduating class

* 99% had h.s. GPA of 3.0 and higher
* 1% had h.s. GPA of 2.0 - 2.99

Heres the stats for UCSD:

avg sat: 2060

* 99% in top 10th of graduating class
* 100% in top quarter of graduating class
* 100% in top half of graduating class

 • 100% had h.s. GPA of 3.0 and higher

.......okay heres what i see. You're gonna have a very hard time getting into UCLA because it's SAT falls in the range of what you have now...but as for UCSD the SAT is 2060, which is below your range. Both colleges take nearly 95% of kids from instate, so that gives you an upperhand. YOU MUST raise your GPA in the 1/2 year you have your senior year. Trust me if you make all A's or even one B the first semester it will raise your GPA tremendously. You're not a lost cause yet man, just work your ass off the beggining of next year, and you HAVE to get some EC's or there is no way you're getting anywhere. Even if you dont get in there is a very very high chance you will get weight listed. Have into any other UC schools? I reccomend you apply early action to UCSD cause that's where your best chance is. So just raise your SAT to a 2300 and get mostly all A's next year (we're talking like one B at most), and I'd say you have a very good chance at UCSD.

PS> Look into University of California: Santa Barbara and University of California: Irvine. Though i live in GA nearly, all my family lives in Cali and a lot of them attended UC schools. They told me that once you're in the UC system, its easier to move around between schools.

you are a lifesaver...drools reminds me of the candy ^_^

thanks alot for that info. let me see.

how is this schedule?

ap lang
ap econ
pre calc/ ap calc (if they let me take calc)
ap comp science
physics
chemistry (haha retook bio first semester and took alg 2 1st and 2nd sememster during 2nd semester so didn't take this yet)

btw did i mention i failed us history and retaking in summer? will dat kill me?

Can you handle four AP courses next year? You seem very smart based on your high SAT scores, but if you have 3.0 now in regular classes how do you expect to significantly raise your gpa taking so many APs unless you truly plan to work much harder?

And failing US hist is gonna hurt. Maybe you can prove you never opened a book for that class but now have turned your life around and are a much better student.

P.S. I don't think your grades are that bad as to require CC. If you can drastically improve your gpa next year and convince admissions that you've changed, your SAT is good enough that you can definitely get into one of thousands of decent schools in America. It won't be an ivy or UCLA, but you can get into a decent college

i did at most 30% of all hw. haha teachers can definately prove that...my grade reprts are filled with assignments not done consistently, class participation atrocious..etc etc.

i think i can handle the ap. seen the books, talked to some ap ppl in my class. but i know i will be in for a tough time.

You gotta work man if you wanna get into a UC school. Next year is gonna be crucial for you. Dont forget the EC's. Plus if you show your parents that you are workin they'll be happy. I can tell that you have pretty bad study habits and you're gonna have to change especially if you want to survive in the UC system. A bad GPA may look bad, but it will look really good if they see a major improvement. If they see that you can handle the 3 AP's and get all A's it'll show that you matured. You're definetly smart as hell but just apply yourself dude, i know plenty of kids like you who are insanely smart but just dont give a *, but to go to UCLA or UCSD you gotta give a *.

Colleges need to realize that High SAT Low GPA kids have low GPA's either because of odd circumstances or because the regimented boredom, monotony, and ease of high school bores them. Most will work in college once they can major in what they want and take the classes that interest em - just the overall gen. education of highschool is so easy and so targeted toward the "average" kid - even AP classes, it bothers em.

Smart kids don't do the homework because they don't NEED to. Teachers like counting homewokr toward grades because it can be a booster for people with low test scores..(...how can I say...less gifted children), but it hurts smart kids who don't do it because...as I said..it's monotonous and useless busywork.

yeh man i concur, i hate high school its just sitting there memorizing **** and reading textbooks, but after taking some college classes i really enjoy learning cuz the professors actually lecture and have discussions

Well, you basically have to learn to be a good student this term, and be a lot more organized about things. Like writing down assignments, doing them when you get home, and so on. If you bump up to AP, the classes will be harder (and maybe more interesting) than you are used to. Since your background isn't what it could be, read * ahead * in your text books so that you will be well-prepared for class.

With EC's - it is easy to spend a huge amount of time on them. You've got to be careful with time management on this - you don't want to mess up your first quarter grades because you joined five clubs!

Your parents are probably going to find out about your photoshopped GPA at some point. Its better if you come clean under your timing. You are probably going to need their help. Once the bruises fade, they will likely give it to you. As a parent, having a child be dishonest hurts - they will be mad, and frustrated. But you need to start talking, and work this out. You are obviously a smart kid, and once you starting thinking - not just reacting - I think things will work out well.

I mean - a few of my friends and I just had a huge discussion with our Chem teacher about it. We don't give a second crap about high school because of the way its taught: a regimented system to teach kids what some bigwhigs think kids need to know. The subjects are as dry as eating paper.

I'm so f'ed in college admissions.

I have about a 3.74 unweighted, 4 weighted...2230 SAT (March..June Incomming),...and NO ec's. That's right. I run XC and Track, but other than those sports, I have done NOTHING in terms of extracirriculars in the last 3 years. I'm great, aren't I.

Haha at least better than me. I am a couch potato.

PS: if i won some awards when i was like in 8th grade does that count? lots of state track medals, nationally ranked chess player and 2nd place in school essay writing comp...

eh about the only thing you could pull off is the nationally ranked chess player. But that looks really good...im impressed

Meh that was the old me ^_^

the current me?

AIM: be the best ragnarok online (online game) ever...

hope i can change my 7 hour per day gaming habit...but argh those scholars are right when they said mmorpgs are the new drugs of the 21st century >_<

hahah yeh those can get addictive...lol just uninstall it

....how can i block someone on this forum? blocks harry j/k

haha spent way too much effort into the game..if i sold my stuff on ebay, i think i can earn up to 5k. haha of coruse thats illegal but there are lots of crazy ppl out there dat are so addicted that they would pay real cash for intangible pixels O_O. but meh, i don't think i will quit but i will definately cut down my time to 2 hours per day?

Dude. Quitting this obsessive forum would give me so much more HW time. Talking about that, bad child. I'm going to go study for my finals. I'm so borderline in 3 classes.

Your parents can help. Especially if you ask. We're not all complete morons.
