Low SAT/High Gpa URM?

Do I have a chance at getting into rice?

These are my stats

African American

GPA: UW 3.9 / W 4.3

SAT: ~2000 (1st try)

2 Honors classes Freshman year
1 Honors/2 AP Sophomore year
2 ap Junior year
Probably 5 AP classes senior year

Curriculars:
Model UN Club President & Founder
National Honor Society
Class Council Rep Sophomore year
Youth in Government
JV Tennis for 2 years
V Tennis for 2 years
Junior Statesman of America for 2 years
Varsity Academic Team

The reason my ecs stop at 2 years for some of them is because i moved schools after sophomore year

+80 Volunteer hours

I realize my SAT is really low for Rice but will being a URM help and if i write a killer essay?

Yea you should definitely apply

Check out the Questbridge program and if you qualify, I would suggest that approach for admissions to Rice.

Also, retake your SAT and/or take the ACT. My younger S’s ACT score equates to about 300 points higher than his SAT score.

My mother alone makes $110k a year so there’s no way i qualify for ANYTHING low income…

How is that SAT low? Low for Rice?

yes. low for rice. especially my math score. their middle 50% is like 720 - 800 and my highest math score is 660…

Do you have a class rank?

You are a high school junior, correct? You still have time to study hard for the SAT and take it again at least once. Also study hard for the ACT and take it. As mentioned, some people do better on one test or the other.

You didn’t mention AP scores (if tests have been taken), but you’ll need 4’s and 5’s in order to get credit at Rice.

Are you from Texas or somewhere else? If you are from somewhere else, your chances of acceptance are a little higher.

Good luck!

my school doesn’t do class rankings

I’ve only taken one ap test thus far and i only got a 3 (euro history)

I’m from Saint Louis, MO so yeah it might help

Thanks

You should look into taking more AP tests. I felt that the AP Scholar awards really helped in my application.

TBH, no one wants to say it, but being an URM helps A LOT. That being said, you can’t slack if you want to get into Rice. Retake the SAT for a 2100+ score and look into what SAT Subject Tests you want to take. Those should be 700+ scores. As long as you work hard, you should be fine.

I would look to retake the SAT or take the ACT, as suggested above. Boosting that should help quite a bit
