low scores/gpa, any chance at UC/CSU??

im a white california female (1/4 japanese, i doubt that would boost admission change though) and i plan to apply to the following schools in november (psychology as my major):

UC Santa Cruz
UC Riverside
UC Merced
UC Irvine
Cal Poly SLO
San Diego State

am i reaching too high by applying to these schools? my stats are embarrasing:

UC GPA: 3.16
SAT I: 580V, 490M, 540W
SAT II: 510 Biology E, 460 Literature

AP/Honors courses taken:
Honors Algebra I (9)
Honors English 9 (9)
Honors Geometry (10)
Honors English 10 (10)
AP European History (10)
Honors Chemistry (10)
AP American Literature (11)
AP American History (11)
AP Government (12)
AP English Language (12)
(also taken 3 years Spanish, 3 years science)

and to add, i got a D second semester of Honors Algebra I my freshman year. im making that up now by taking Precalculus. would that greatly affect my admission chances?

thank you for your imput.

UCM/ Riverside/UCSC: matches
UCI: reach
Caly Poly Slo/ San Diego Sate: not too sure but i think they are matches and slight reaches

i think you have chances at a csu & uc merced. my friend had a 3.0 and got into riverside/merced/Cal Poly SLO BUT he did get 710 on japanese and 720 on satmath so i duno how much that would compare.. but yeah do you have extra curricular stuff? that helps a ton

thanks for the imput =D

i dont have any ECs =(. i was in CSF one semester, but i didn't do much. im always tired and wornout because im anemic, so i tend to take naps after school, and i sleep as much as i can now because early this month i got a job.

i know i can't score higher on the SATs because i have to absorb ?s before i can fully understand them, which takes up time. i took the ACT, expecting to do better but unfortunately my SAT scores are better. so i think im stuck with these stats.

more imput would be great, thank you =)

I'm going to have to say those are all reaches. Maybe SDSU would be a reach/match, but it's getting more selective every year. I would try schools like cal poly pomona, long beach, or chico state. If you consider privates, look into st. mary's(moraga), USF, and USD.

edit: actually, UCR has an avg. SAT under 1100. I would apply there and UCM and see what happens.

dreamingofdreams:

UCI: Reach
UCSC/UCR/UCM: Match

you should seriously consider taking part in a club or somethign this year.. like make it now haha and just add it or something. at the moment .. i cans ee that you took a variety of coursees, but it doesnt show you excelled in them in ur gpa. i would suggest taking sats oveR? i'm not a good sat taker myself but i'm aiming for a 1900 in the dec one.
and yeah sdsu is getting selective. couple of friends of mine didnt get in with a 3.3... i know a few kids who got in but they had pretty good stats. like 3.5s/3.6/s (weighed) and then OK sat.. like 1100+ (for the old sat format)
hope that helped?

I think you have a good chance at any other csu campus besides the cal poly slo and sdsu

great chance at most CSU's. UC: Santa Cruz, Merced, Riverside. Irvine might be a reach. Berkeley and UCLA are super reaches, impossible I think

merced, riverside, santa cruz are all matches-- irvines defintely a reach, but not that far, if your personal statements are good.

your best bets are UCM/ Riverside.

i'm not sure about cal poly... what major are you applying under? be sure to comment on my thread...

i forgot to add that i have work experience (and im currently working), plus did some volunteer work at my church, but only around 50 hours.

and i dropped riverside after visiting the campus (talk about getting lightheaded from the pollution!!) and added uc santa barbara, which ranks with irvine.

liferunsby, i hope you're right about irvine being somewhat a possiblity with good personal statments, since im confident in my essays.

thanks for your responses everyone

i appreciate your imput!

UCI: Reach
UCSC/UCM/UCR: Match
Cal Poly SLO: Reach
SDSU: Match

SDSU is actually probably a reach, average for admitted were 3.63 gpa and in the 1100's sat, its become pretty hard to get into cause everyone wants to go there. eligibility minimum cutoff was around 3700 yours is 3598, but you might want to try the other california state schools
