Hello,

I'm an international student. I took the revised GRE, landed up with a low verbal score. I got 152 (53 percentile, 490 on the old scale.)

I want to apply to a Master's course in Computer Science.

Do you think my verbal score will hurt my application? I have a decent quant score (163) and AW score. (4.5)

I have a good undergrad GPA and have worked pretty hard on the other aspects of my application. But I'm just really, really worried about my low verbal score.

I want to apply to top 30 schools.

Will a decent AW score offset my low verbal score? Or should I consider applying lower ranked schools based on my verbal scores?

I'm really, really worried/confused. Any kind of help will be appreciated.

As far as an MS in comp sci goes, I don’t think your verbal score will matter much.

Polarscribe, does’s low GRE scores affect funding as well even if the verbal section is not that important for CS/engineering majors? Or have I heard wrong?

Poirot, I’ve seen a lot worse than that that from students who hve gotten into top PHD programs, but there other areas were pretty strong.

Just curious though, did you study for the verbal section (like remembering thousands of words)?

It can affect funding, but there are few MSCS programs which offer funding, so I assumed that wasn’t really an issue. MSCS is a professional-track degree without many assistantship/fellowship opportunities.

I’m not really worried about the funding because Master’s students don’t generally get funded anyway.

Also, I was wondering. GATech’s website says “We expect GRE Scores of at least 500 on the Verbal section and 700 on the quant.”
Does this mean it’s a cut off? I’m worried about this, because my GRE Verbal score evaluates to 490 on the old scale. I scored well beyond their minimum of 700 on the quant, though. My AW is also more than what they specify as the minimum. So, are there chances of them not considering my application at all because of the verbal?

I’m worried because a lot of universities specify the average GRE Scores of successful applicants, or their minimum requirements. While I always meet their requirements on the quant and AW sections, verbal is almost always a problem.
So, should I consider not applying to these universities at all, just based on the verbal GRE? :S

Clandry, not really. I learnt a few new words here and there, but I didn’t really learn thousands of new and big words. To be honest, English was never my weak point. I wasn’t even too worried. I don’t know what went wrong. :(

If you’re close to the cutoff, I would apply. 10 points on the old scale is, like, one question.

Okay, thanks! :)

Do they use an automated system that will reject all scores that don’t meet the cut off or something? If that’s the case, my application might get rejected right away, right?

Also, if a university’s website only specifies the average quant scores of successful applicants, is it safe to assume that they don’t care much about the verbal?

Doubtful. But you can find out for sure by just calling the department and asking if their cutoffs are flexible or not.
