the GRE verbal

I got a 770 on it and am applying to mathematics programs. Will anyone even care?

No, not really, at least in terms of admission.

But it could help you out in terms of university fellowships. University fellowship candidates are nominated by each department. These are top applicants in every respect, but top applicants with great across-the-board GREs are especially attractive fellowship nominees. This is because there are few decent metrics for fellowship committees to use as they examine and rank candidates from all departments.

Hi Professor X,
I got a 460 on my verbal, 760 for math, and 4.5 on my writing. I am applying for mechanical and aero engineering for grad school. Will the extremely low verbal score hurt me? Should I take it again? Thanks.

The verbal will not hurt you, especially if English is not your first language.

hi there, i have taken the gre twice. the first time i did not prepare at all and i got a 570V, 530Q and 5.5 writing. i have since gone to grad to school for a grad certificate and am now applying to phd programs in political science. i thought it would be a good idea to get my quant score up, so i took a prep course and retook the test. of all the crazy things i actually scored 60 points LOWER on the quant section (and 680V). i retook the test to raise my score and improve my chances of admission and now i am concerned i have only hurt my chances. i am curious to hear other's opinions on this situation.

as a sidenote, i do not think that my score was an accurate measure of the relationship between my ability and preparation. i am considering taking the test again. advice?

many thanks in advance for your time.

I must say and ask: 570V to 680V is very very impressive, and how did you prepare for your verbal section?
The 530Q to 470Q is even more impressive... the GRE Q and SAT Q are similar, yet how did you get such a low score?

Anyways, I personally think that almost anyone can get a 650+Q score if they really prepare for it (not even a month) since the subject isn't hard.

With the 680V, I think you will be able to make an excellent score (much better than the 1150), therefore if you have the time and money, I think you should go for it.

i just studied the words. they just make sense to me. it's the math that makes absolutely no sense to me.

Dear Sir,
I have a quant 750 and v 400 … do you think it is good to retake GRE? I’m trying for Mechanical MS in colleges like Purdue and Michigan …
