As a recently admitted in-state student, I’m not sure how this makes me feel. Thoughts?
I wish there were more transparency in how the money is managed here on campus. Every year students wonder why x, y, and z funding has to be cut with no clear explanation from administration why. If there are budget cuts, where does the remaining money go? I am a student and I wonder a lot if it is necessary to pay very high salaries to some administration. Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. A lot of students believe there is too many people in administrative positions. With the rising cost of everything in California, it makes sense why UC wants to absorb more out of state students cause there’s simply not enough money. As long as Cal remains a public institution it owes the public an explanation of where their tax dollars are going.
No matter how relaxed it is, the OOS acceptance rate is still lower than in state’s.
Yeah, this is BS. OOS students still have tougher admissions standards than in-state residents, and they’ll also have to pay more money to attend. If I remember correctly, there was a post here that claimed that Berkeley was limiting OOS enrollment for this admissions cycle, making it once again even harder for OOS students to gain admission.
the auditor’s report showed that the OOS students do not have tougher admission standards. there are far too many excellent in-state students (and many from CA public high schools) being turned away from public universities in California.

From the article,
“In the last three years, nearly 16,000 nonresident undergraduates — about 29 percent of those admitted — have won spots at the coveted public university with grade-point averages and scores below the median of admitted Californians, according to the 116-page audit.”
If 29% of OOS people have GPAs and scores less than that of in-state students admitted, then a significant majority, 71%, of OOS admitted have higher scores and GPA than in-state applicants. How can this be considered lower standards? Of course, there is more to an applicant than just test scores and GPA, but at least from these measures, OOS score significantly higher.
