"Lower" unweighted GPA, but a lot of difficult classes

I say “Lower” because my cumulative 3.674 lower compared to other posting on here with 3.8-4.0 unweighted. Freshmen year I took 1 AP class and had a cumulative 4.0 the whole year. Sophomore year I took 2 AP( one of them was Chemistry–extremely difficult) classes and I it dropped down to a 3.719. Junior year I took 5 AP(one of them was US History–also extremely difficult) classes and it dropped even lower to a 3.674, so roughly a 3.7. I just wanted to know what colleges think of this. I feel it’s near impossible to keep perfect grades while increasing involvement in extracurricular activities and difficulty of courses.

Also, let it be known that I have been doing Varsity Track & Field for 4 years, and Varsity Cross Country for 3 years, and I have been involved in 2-3 clubs over the years and am the treasurer of one of them. If it means anything, I am Nigerian.

Thanks.

Depends on your class rank. Since GPA varies so much from school to school, colleges will mainly want to see how you do in comparison to your peers, and they will also look at your high school.

If your high school is very competitive (ranked pretty high) and you have a good class rank, then colleges won’t really care.

Where are you planning on applying to?

I’m in the top 7% of my class; my rank is 47/665. I go a very competitive public school.

Not quite sure yet, but Cornell, RICE, and Notre Dame are definitely some of them.

It’s very possible. It’s done quite a bit and it’s what you are competing against.

A 3.7 is a 3.7 It’s healthy and useful to accept the realities of your academic record and make your applications appropriately.

Colleges will see that you took hard classes to challenge yourself. I think they primarily look at weighted gpa, but if you want to go to top schools (ivy league), then unweighted gpa counts too.
