Loyola Marymount for Acting BA

My D recently decided that she wanted a BA instead of a BFA so our list is being totally revamped.
Can anyone tell me about the LMU BA and how hard this program is to get into?
Her stats for LMU look close, test scores a little low. Does anyone know how important the audition is? Can that push a kid over the top if they are close.

THANKS so much for any information!

I know someone attending and she loves it. I don’t remember it being auditioned? I do know she has had awesome opportunities there and will be the lead (as a junior) in the fall Shakespeare play. She feels her professors have been demanding, yet understanding. She has really grown as an actress (she was in HS theatre with my son). If you have any other specific questions, I would be happy to ask her or put you in touch with her. The campus is gorgeous!

Last year’s requirements were that you had to send in a DVD audition…don’t know if that has changed.

@MsMommy, thank you so much, It is a video audition now. They have changed the core curriculum for the theater arts program and the audition could easily be new. We toured the campus last summer when she was a rising junior and fell in love, how could you not. At the time we were mostly touring as a road trip with friends because she was set on BFA for MT. Now it is a major player on our list. I would love to know if your S’s friend has a double major or a minor in something. My D is leaning towards double major in Theater/Education and they told her she would need to declare as an incoming freshman to make it work.

She is not double majoring, but some semesters took 24 credits…stretched thin, but just loved all the opportunities offered. She was thinking of minoring in Chemistry before she fell in love with theatre her senior year of HS. Are you on FB? She usually responds to private messages on FB. I can PM you her FB name and let her know you will be sending a friend request…if you have any other questions! She may be able to give you more info on the audition, too.

@evilqueen, Wagner College on Staten Island has a Dual Major Acting and Education BA you might want to check out.

James Madison in VA has a BA track in Theatre Education… a student could also potentially double major in another subject and complete education requirements for that area to be certified for both Theatre and a "hard’ subject. PM or email me if you have any questions.

@MsMommy do you know if it’s possible to double major with theatre and film production?

@KayMoore15 , I don’t know the answer to that. I would call them to get the answer for certain. Another school I love for acting and film is Chapman!

@KayMoore15 my son was accepted at LMU. Love the school, the Dean and the program. It came down to LMU and USC for him. During our meeting with the Dean of the theater department he said anything is possible, but it very difficult due to workloads and how competitive getting into the film major. He indicated a minor might be more reasonable and he knew kids doing that.

@RALdad Do you know if the minor has good opportunities like the major with connections and internships? I heard their film program is really good for getting students into the industry. Does this apply to the minor as well?

@KayMoore15 As it was explained to me there seem to be good opportunities for connections. Not as good as someone focusing on Film exclusively and devoting every spare moment to that goal, but still very good opportunities. One student (theater major and film minor) interned at Comedy Central one summer.
