White/Upper-Middle Class, Public School. IN STATE!
My school has a good record with U of M, around 84% of applicants were accepted in 2015.
GPA(UW/W): 3.62/3.84
ACT: 34 (36E,33M,33R,34S,8/12W)
Class Rank: 57/321 (U of M doesn’t consider class rank, but I thought I’d put it in anyways)
Course Rigor: Rigorous, senior schedule is very rigorous; 5/6 of my classes this year are AP or Honors courses
EC’s: Good, although not super broad.
LOR’s: Good, including one from a professor at a local university
Other: My mom worked for U of M (if it makes a difference), legacy (kinda), huge upward trend in GPA (3.6 soph to 4.3 junior year), my essay is good, too (at least I think it is :P)
So how does it look? I know my GPA’s low but I hope I can make up ground in other places. Thanks!!!
You’ll be fine. Most likely should get in. I have plenty of friends who had lower test scores/sat scores that got in (assuming that everything else on your app is good).
Also check your essays/supplements. My academic advisor read through mine and told me during orientation that the admission people highly value that.
Thank you!!! Is there anyone at U of M who can read my essays and give me feedback before I submit my apps? I know there’s an essay writing workshop that my admissions counselor is running, but I was thinking of just emailing her and asking her if she could give me some feedback. Do you think that’s a good idea? Thanks!
I mean, you could message me and I could look over them if you’d like but I don’t think there’s any specific person with admissions that would read over your supplements/essays. Asking a few people you’re close with/trust is always a positive.
And just remember (this applies to most applications either way): for your “why michigan” question, make sure you can’t swap out U Michigan with any other college. (Talk about specifics, i.e. dual degree possibility, maybe mention football/atheletics if you’re a big sports fan, the specific Ross 3 year BBA program if you’re applying to Ross, etc.)
For your essay, just make sure you have a voice. In my opinion, the topic isn’t the most important part, it’s about incorporating your voice and ideas to make it unique to you that makes an essay stronger.
For your community supplement, again, say something specific about that community which makes it different than most/all other communities (don’t just say creates friendships, etc. be more specific)
wolverine, how low of test scores and gpa would be unacceptable? I know umich doesn’t have a cutoff technically, but how low is too low? and if you went on to my chance me thread, ignore it because its outdated information
