LSA Honors College '14

Hey guys,

For those of you who applied and got into the Honors college...what are your thoughts on it? This thread can just be a general discussion on the Honors program here. Anyone recommend living in Honors housing? For those of you who are in Honors, how would you compare it, pros and cons, to just the normal college of LSA.

Thanks

do it for the housing.

Do a search… but yea the biggest benefit is the housing

You’re living with smarter people, on average. If you’re more intellectual, this is a big perk. Also, honors office will often cut through lots of red tape when one is looking to do unusual things.

I got invited, want to apply, but what on earth is up with the essays lol? first time I was stumped in writing essays for uni, and I even wrote the NYU poem which was really weird, so thats saying a lot

Oh really? I thought South Quad isn’t as good as Central Campus. But its guaranteed…so its totally better than the off chance of being stuck on North Campus I guess.

South Quad is (one of the dorms on) central campus.

is it worth it to apply for the honors program if you’re a pre-admit to ross? i got invited to apply and was thinking about doing it until i found out i got in to ross, and now i’m torn since as i understand it youre not in the honors program as soon as you enter ross? any thoughts or opinions would be great

^Do it for the housing.

If you’re a pre-admit for Ross…doesn’t that mean you’re in business school? Which means it isn’t part of the LSA program…which means there isn’t an Honors option for you? I dunno, there’s not really many benefits besides housing and the Honors Senior Thesis which could help you get into grad school. Other than that…its pretty normal.

Ahhh…is South Quad a nice place to live?

How long do people stay in honors housing anyways? Isn’t it just the first and second years, or are there a good amount of upperclassmen in honors housing?

You don’t start Ross til sophomore year. You can be dual enrolled in both colleges for as long as you want the housing, then you can drop LSA and just continue with Ross when you’re ready to move out of the dorms. South Quad isn’t anything terribly special, but if you do Honors you are guaranteed it (aka you avoid North Campus with probability 1).

Ahhh I see. That helps. So where’s the best place to live? And could someone answer the question about how long do people generally stay in Honors housing?

You’re basically placed into South Quad if you’re in honors, I believe. It depends on how long you want to live in the dorms – you could do it for four years if you want. Most people only live in the dorms for 1 or 2 years.

What are the differences between Great Books and Classical Civilization?

Great Books and Classic Civ read basically the same things (at least they did first semester). A vast majority of people take GB (only one guy in my hall took civ). GB has more reading and more papers (this was the case with my professor first semester, though it changes). Classic civ. was known to be easier first semester but ramped up second semester.

Mhmm thanks! What else can you tell us about the Honors program Hattricky9 since I’m guessin youre in it?

“You’re living with smarter people, on average. If you’re more intellectual, this is a big perk. Also, honors office will often cut through lots of red tape when one is looking to do unusual things.”

This probably depends on your personal experiences. In my experience, Honors students are not really smarter. Also, you’re not guaranteed a spot in South Quad (unless that has changed). I was placed in Couzens Hall when I was a freshman.

I think a lot of what UMich says about the Honors program is ********. I have noticed almost no benefit from being in it (I’m doing Computer Science now, though, so that might be a factor).

However, like others have said, do it if only to be placed in South Quad.

Yea I know someone who was placed in Couzens, but that’s definitely not bad. The Hill is more fun than Central anyway. Anything is better than North.

That’s my observation as well. There’s a lunch coming up, so free food I guess.

next year everyone will be guaranteed south quad. as for honors not living up to the “hype,” I feel they pitch the program as exactly what it is – as far as individuals’ expectations go, they can’t really account for that.
