Hi all,
It seems that a thread for the 2017 Partners in Science program at the Liberty Science Center has not been created yet. I recently finished all my application materials (which was slightly arduous relative to other summer programs), and I have my interviews soon. Any alumni- what kind of questions do they ask you in the interview? Since LSC is one of the few programs that hold interviews, I am feeling pretty nervous… Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
On a side note, I just read someone else’s post describing a miserable internship experience, though it seems to pertain largely to the computer science or physics program. Did anyone else have a problematic experience?
Hi, I was an alumni from the 2016 program (I also commented on the previous thread).
As for the interview, I asked the same thing last year on this site XD! Last year, you moved around to different stations with a small group of kids (groups are randomized) based on different interview topics. One was about personal topics like hobbies and strengths, another was science-based (it was open ended based on your preferences), and another was one-on-one for a short period of time, which asked a variety of questions that were college-interview-like. That being said, some of the people I talked to last year who had applied in previous years had been asked very different questions in the past, especially in science, so I guess it varies by year.
The best advice I have is to prepare for the program like an interview for a tech or science-based college. I did this, and it helped me a ton come interview-time. I was prepared to answer vague, open ended questions and didn’t freeze up (that happened to a couple of the people in my interview groups). Perhaps have a teacher mock-interview you? The interview can play a big role in admissions (if you interview well that is), so its not something to be taken lightly.
As for bad experiences, like I said in the other thread, it boils down to which mentor you get. If you make it to the interview stage with your mentor, make sure they are a good fit. Otherwise good luck !
By the way, some kids are called into a second interview, but others are not. Don’t be alarmed if you aren’t. I wasn’t, and thought I was definitely going to be rejected. Boy was I surprised when I got an acceptance email! Just trying to save you some stress : ).
insertcleverpun, thanks for the quick reply!! As for the small groups, i am a little confused: do you have to answer the questions in front of everyone else? Does each person take turns answering? Thanks!
Did you receive an email on whether you were accepted or not yet?
Last year they emailed students on April 24th at around 12:30 AM (XD - I was so surprised to get notice that early), so chances are results will not be out for some time.
@insertcleverpun was the application due later or earlier this year? I’m just trying to figure out if the decision date will get pushed back this year haha
All dates for this year’s program were about the same as last years. Decisions should be released around the same time (at least, that’s what I predict).
I’m so nervous to find out but I want it to be sooner
Did any of you get email. Iot like an update email
I mean I got like an update email
I have one friend that got a rejection email and I also got an update email that stated mentors were reviewing my application (I applied again this year too). Last year only one email was sent out (as far as I know) with a flat-out rejection/acceptance, so idk if my email is a waitlist type or if they simply decided to give advanced notice this year due to the large amount of applicants.
Did you get acceptance last year
@lateststar124 Yep - I participated in the 2016 program : )
Great @insertcleverpun !! Are you looking to pursue the same research project as last year?
Did everyone who got update email received interview with mentors because one of my friend received interview with mentor
@insertcleverpun how much time did it take for you to receive an email for second-round interviews after your friends did?
