Does it make a difference if my son is not in the uga honors program. How large are the non honors classes? I understand he can apply to honors after the first semester if has a certain gpa.
Anyone willing to chime in? He is trying to decide between the two.

Sorry I’m a little late to the game! It’s finals week.

If your son is still deciding, I’d say UGA honors is a great way to go. To get in after his first semester, he would need to take 5 classes plus the 1 hour a week freshman seminar, earn a 3.8 GPA, and get 2 recommendations from UGA professors. In choosing his classes, he should purposefully register for classes with a smaller class size to get to know professors well enough for them to write good recs. The classes aren’t huge and being in honors gets to be less of a plus as you move through your major and classes get naturally smaller.

I love honors because I get the big state school feel with tons of organizations and opportunities but I know honors is looking out for me. They’re bringing down alumni, speakers, and companies looking to hire their students. Honors classes tend to be easier because teachers know if they gave you busywork you could handle it, so they don’t. You get a lot more meaningful, application-style assignments. I’ve really enjoyed my time here and love Athens. I hope your son decides to come to UGA and congrats on the scholarship!
