Do any of you remember the spreadsheet on matriculation stats that @Lvillegrad created a few years ago? It was tremendously helpful for the big picture when I was thinking about my older kid. I had the sit bookmarked on my computer but, alas, it appears to be gone. I don’t suppose anyone saved it? I know the data is outdated but I like number and I am only really interested in some of the NY day schools and boarding schools as they apply to my kid, I was thinking I could update some of them.
It used to be here: http://www.matriculationstats.org/, after checking out this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/prep-school-admissions/840831-college-matriculation-statistics-p8.html
I will do more looking.
EDIT: It looks like @Lvillegrad hasn’t been here on CC since May 2013. He/she probably stopped running that website.
You can use the Wayback Machine to get to it…
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.matriculationstats.org/
@momonymous thank you so much for that. I am in awe of your internet skills!
@momonymous - could you explain how Wayback Machine works? It looks like it could be a useful tool but there in no info on the linked page explaining how it works.
@HarvestMoon1, I tell you what I know, but I’m no expert. They take snapshots of websites from time to time. (Must be automated somehow.) So, across the top, there’s a graph that shows by year, where they’ve taken snapshots of that particular website. Click on a year, and the calendar for that year appears below, with blue dots over the dates where there’s a snapshot. Click on one of those blue dots, and it will show you the snapshot of website from that date.
For this particular site, I had to go back to 2010 or 2011 to find one that had the Day Schools Outside NY data, so if you don’t find what you’re looking for in the more recent snapshot dates, try some earlier dates, it may be there.
HTH
its all there you just have to look at the various highlighted days which show which days they have snapshots of the websites. Its essentially the matriculation dada for the 5 years ending in 2010, so its a little dates but its also pretty consistent with what you would expect it to be if someone was willing to update the data. I might do it for schools I am interested in for my kids but there is no way I would undertake to update the whole thing
The site is very similar to prepreview’s list
which has a pay wall doesn’t it @heartburner?
Yes - I paid the fee because this whole process is making me a little bit crazy and I can no longer think rationally about boarding school selection. I don’t think it is worth it as almost all the information is publicly available. Some of the student reviews are available verbatim on the boarding school review site. I can see if I can cut and paste some of the information or maybe PM something if you need to know what the HYPSM matriculation rate is for Andover or whatever.
thats ok, thanks for offering @heartburner, I was able to see all the data @momonymous suggested. I found with the info that I was asking about here, that the matriculation data is pretty much what you would expect it to be. It doesn’t really vary that widely from using average SSAT score or average SAT score, and yes I know about the hidden gems, I get it. But I like a spread sheet and you have to put something in the columns. I refuse to pay for access to one of those sites. If my kid doesn’t get good news in two weeks I might rework Lvillegrad’s spreadsheet with more recent numbers, but its a lot of work and I doubt it has really changed all that much
Confession…I’m a data geek.
We have a spreadsheet of matriculation stats for Lawrenceville, along with 39 other boarding schools. (It has since been scrubbed from the internet, which is an interesting fact in and of itself). What’s nice about this data is that it separates out where boarding school grads matriculate into, based on four college categories: 1) HYPMS (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT and Stanford); 2) IVY (Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Pennsylvania, Princeton and Yale); 3) Top Schools (top 25 National Universities and top 15 Liberal Arts Colleges); 4) Strong Schools (based on top 50 National Universities and top 30 Liberal Arts Colleges). It then uses that data to assign a “matric strong index score” to each boarding school. VERY nifty tool (understatement) to have access to when considering where to apply. I can make this available to CC by scanning it as a jpg or pdf but then upload it to where?

And on a related topic…did anyone see Business Insider’s latest “most elite boarding schools in america” chart? (Don’t get me wrong…I don’t relate to “elite” per se, but I do enjoy data and this chart includes endowment size, which is hugely important when it comes to financial aid. It also includes acceptance rate.)

@mathmusicmadness Ask @stargirl3 to put your spreadsheet in a google doc spreadsheet. She did this for other things and was able to keep access to it anonymous. I would like to see your data if possible.
@mathmusicmadness @heartburner If you create a spreadsheet and make it public, people can see it without logging in, therefore remaining anonymous.
You forget that I am a parent and am unaware of such mystical things. I would certainly mess this up somehow. I stick to what I know thank you.
Ack. “create a spreadsheet” great idea but too much data combined with too little time makes for no spreadsheet. If I come across it in a buried web location will let you know. In the meantime, @LifeLongNYer you will be interested to know that Lawrenceville ranks very highly in this data (thus the interest by @Lvillegrad ?). Sorry but I just don’t have the time to enter data point by point. A few articles at my fingertips though…
http://www.forbes.com/2010/04/29/best-prep-schools-2010-opinions-private-education_slide.html
“To rank the 20 best prep schools, we started by creating a candidate list of 55 top private educational institutions. We then ranked them on four data points. Half of the ranking was based on the school’s student/faculty ratio, percentage of faculty with advanced degrees, and size of its endowment. The other half was based on the percentage of graduates, over the last five years (unless otherwise noted), who matriculated into 10 top colleges.”
[note this info is on prep schools, which includes boarding + day]
@mathmusicmadness, I’m pretty sure the data you described in your post #11 is the data in the link in my post #2 above.
MMM - Does your data look like this?
http://web.archive.org/web/20140520072322/http://matriculationstats.org/boarding-school-stats
@heartburner Yes! Love it! That you found it! Yes!
Yes, I believe the spreadsheet that @mathmusicmadness is referring to actually is the one and the same as the one I am referring to that was created by @lvillegrad. Anyone who wants to see it can use the technique suggested further up in this post by @momonymous. Thats what I did and you can access it and sort by whatever category you like. I agree adding an endowment column would be helpful. @stargirl3 if you are interested I am sure you could do it. I was happy just to be able to see it again and this time I printed it our after sorting it the way I like. @heartburner the info is what you have already seen.
