I know someone who is writing a whole bunch of BS about their EC's in their college application. They're claiming that they had this job, did this for the community, and were in these clubs, and etc.

My question is, will that person get caught? Do colleges find out whether your EC's are authentic? How do they find out?

A percentage of prospectives are randomly audited each year to conduct background/fact checks...don't know the specifics of numbers and such but there is ALWAYS a chance it could be you. (And by that I mean, universal "you" lol)

To the OP: sometimes colleges do random checks and call your guidance counselor or they just take it for granted. If you have an interview for that school though--be prepared to remember what you put for your ECs and answer questions about them.

if you put all these amazing stuff in ur ECs section, but ur transcript stuff is crap, theyre going to be suspicious. im guessing your friend's not doing it and it's really you (cuz i mean honestly, who cares enough about a friend to post a thread about him/her unless you want to either do the same or are doing the same), so ill say this: don't do it. have some dignity. besides if you do get caught, your life is practically over. literally over, since you're not even going to get accepted into the universities with a 100% acceptance rating.

I guess the bigger question is if you get caught are you sure you handle the consequences; rescinding your admissions, expulsion or rescinding your degree.

Most of the ECs listed are not important enough to get you into college and those that are important enough can be easily checked. If your ECs are not corrobrated by another source; teachers, GCs they do become circumspect.

i wont blame the op for asking nor will i say that it is actually him that is cheating. this is a legit question. i have a friend that is applying to the same school as me who is doing something similar. i just sit helplessly as it happens.

There are a lot of EC's that can't be proven false. If you say you picked up trash in your neighborhood every weekend with a friend, nobody can really disprove that. Same if you say that you played the trombone at weddings. Generally it's lying about EC's within your school which is bad because you'd be found out with a simple call to your guidance counselor.

If you're brazen and shameless enough to lie, I'm sure there must be a couple of things you've actually done as a result of that not-a-care-for-the-world attitude. Write about them, instead.
