I was wondering since a friend of mine who is planning to transfer told me today that he could just simply find the names of the clubs at his university and write it on his application and he'll be fine... I thought it was unethical , but I'm wondering if the admissions committee would find out? and how would they find out?

That's pretty stupid and pretty crappy of him to do that. That being said, the chances of the school checking out each and every club he says he joined is minimal unless he said he was the president or something like that of the club.

I got pretty ****ed at him when he told me that too . We're applying for the same school too and it would really suck if he got in (although my grades are generally higher) because he lied on his application ...

Write an anonymous letter to the school about his ECs. :P

But yeah, some people sadly do that and get away with it. However, it's very risky. Even if you don't get caught during admissions, if they somehow find out during any of the four years you were there they would probably expel you (no matter how close you were to graduating).

wow your friend seems like a total jerk. That's one of the most despicable things I can think of. You should consider writing a letter to the college because if they don't find out, he's screwing you over. Jw, what school are you both applying to?

I wish good luck to you in applying though! Your friend can die though

If you want the reality of the situation, there is an extremely slim chance that the admissions office is going to look into any MINOR EC/club you list. Is it wrong? Yes. Would you get away with it? More than likely yes.

Now I'm not saying I recommend actually doing this, cause it's kind of a dumb thing to fake. Joining clubs and participating in ECs is probably the easiest thing a student can do to aid in building a solid college transcript. If you are too unmotivated to do even that, I'm curious as to what the rest of your transcript looks like or how serious you are when it comes to wanting to be accepted to a good school.

Oh and replace "you" and "your" with "your friend" in my post above.. if said friend actually exists.

Yeah i highly doubt admin would look into some of the stuff on the app. I had to change stuff on my app b/c i had to step down from the positions due to time constraints primarily for that reason. I was president of 3 clubs and a manager for an organization on my campus but i just didn't have time. I figure i might as well be safe and not risk them checking into it after i already stepped down and see i am not there. Friend seems like a jerk for doing that.

Honestly, who knows if anyone will find out? It's likely they never will, but if they do, his acceptance will be rescinded. If they do at any time after he graduates, he will be stripped of his degree and likely fired from whatever job required a college degree in the first place. Misrepresenting anything is a recipe for disaster on any resume/application.

Stupid idea. It's unethical, plus simply, just a dumb idea. The type of EC that would be feasibly 'fakable' isn't nearly significant enough to tip the scales at a decent school. Faking a club or two or even five is ineffectual. Good ECs (i.e. ones that will actually matter in admissions) like writing for a paper/journal, research, varsity sports, etc. are difficult to fabricate. Your friend is an idiot.

dont do it because you wont be able to write about them. it would sound fake and considering the experience of the admissions officers, dont try it. be confident in your abilities.

hmm I think it would be wrong of your "friend" to fake that. even if your "friend" now knows, via this website, that he can get away with it, if your "friend" wasn't a complete jack-ass he wouldn't make crap up. Plus your "friend" should realize that saying you volunteer for the Community Service Club 2 hours a week isn't impressive - impressive EC's, like research, internships, etc, can't be easily made up. Tell that to your "friend". :)
